Research Analyst--Experimental Physics

  • Zap Energy is looking for a Research Analyst to join the data science team.  This person will play a critical role in developing our physical understanding of plasma dynamics in the machine. This role involves forging relationships with people across R&D to synthesize an overall physical picture of machine performance and plasma dynamics.

    Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer. 
     
    Responsibilities:
    • Extract key physics results from data across diagnostics related to machine operation and performance.
    • Conduct statistical analysis of the machine performance and report results to the R&D team.
    • Generate reports and present on key experimental campaigns to the R&D team.
    • Make recommendations for operation and contribute to discussions on machine operation.
    • Write both simulation and experimental campaign proposals based on analysis results.
    • Develop metadata features to contribute to our data pipeline.
    • Develop synthetic diagnostics of simulation data to contribute to our simulation data pipeline.
    Qualifications:
    Required:
    • PhD in physics with 2-5 years’ experience, or Masters with 5-10 years’ experience.
    • Extensive experience analyzing experimental physics data and developing algorithms for data extraction.
    • Demonstrated competence presenting and communicating scientific results.
    • Proficient in python including numpy, matplotlib, and scipy.
    • Experience working in large collaborative environments.
    Preferred:
    • Background in plasma physics and high-temperature plasma diagnostics.
    • Familiar with linux environments.
    • Familiar with SQL or NoSQL databases.
    • Familiarity with plasma physics code bases such as WARPXM, NIMROD, computational fluid dynamics / hyperbolic differential equation solvers, or other relevant software.

    The estimated salary range for this position is $100k-130k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.
