Professor - Social Work teaches courses in the discipline area of social work. Being a Professor - Social Work provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Social Work typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students. Assistant Professor of Social Work

  • Seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Social Work's BSW program with a start date of Fall 2024. This is a renewable, non-tenure track position.

    Carthage's BSW program goals are:

    • To educate students in applying professional values, ethics, and knowledge grounded in anti-oppressive theories and social work practice.
    • To educate students in the values and knowledge of critical social work and social justice in collaboration with other disciplines.
    • To graduate anti-racist BSW generalist practitioners who will become courageous social change agents in their community.
    • The Social Work Department recognizes the insidiousness of institutional racism and is committed to being a leader at the College toward becoming an anti-racist institution.

    Job Responsibilities:

    The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that will include:

    • Design and teach courses consistent with the Department's mission & goals in the core areas of the Social Work curriculum including Research and Social Welfare Policy Analysis.
    • Teaching in other areas as well including social work electives. There may be opportunities to develop new elective courses that contribute to the general education curriculum.
    • Teach a full-time course load of 7 courses per year across Fall, January term and Spring semesters.
    • Advise BSW students
    • Support student recruitment and retention
    • Assess student learning outcomes in compliance with all CSWE accreditation and competency standards.
    • Contributing to the development of the social work curriculum.
    • Engaging in professional service within the department, college and the professional community. College service activities include but are not limited to: participating in department, division and faculty meetings; serving on college committees; participating in student recruitment & retention activities.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Must be able to teach courses across the core social work curriculum integrating critical social work and interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks. This particular position will be responsible for teaching the research and social work policy analysis courses.
    • Demonstrated experience with, and commitment to, diversity, equity and social justice in social work practice.
    • Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and at least 4 years post-MSW social work employment.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Earned PhD (or ABD) in Social Work or a closely related field.
    • Post MSW social work employment in social services across a range of practice settings.
    • Previous teaching experience in higher education, particularly courses in Research Methods and Social Welfare Policy Analysis.
    • Research interest/experience in an area relevant to the Department's mission & goals.
