Professor - Sociology teaches courses in the discipline area of sociology. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Sociology provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Sociology typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Job Description
    The purpose of this position is to perform teaching duties and professional service for the College. This is accomplished by providing instruction as assigned; conducting and assessing instruction; assisting in conducting program review; developing and/or modifying curriculum; assisting students through academic advising; establishing, posting, and maintaining office hours; providing leadership for the development, growth, and support of the College and the assigned area; and undertaking professional community service.

    Other duties include supporting the mission, vision and values of the College and policies of the Board of Trustees; serving on various College committees, task forces and other groups; and participating in various official College ceremonies and meetings.

    This is a 10-months-per-year, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position which will begin in August 2024. A comprehensive benefits package is included offering medical, dental and vision coverage; generous paid time off; tuition assistance; and retirement savings.

    Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.

    Required Education
    Master's degree in Psychology with 18 graduate hours in Sociology
    Required Experience
    One year of full-time teaching or the equivalent adjunct teaching, preferably in a community college setting.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Ability to teach a range of psychology courses and sociology course, such as Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, The Helping Relationship, Human Development Across the Life Span, and Introduction to Sociology, etc. on and off-campus by drawing on face-to-face, online, and hybrid course delivery methods.
    • Ability to interact with students and prospective students outside the classroom environment in discipline-related activities, while facilitating successful student learning through the effective use of technology.
    • Demonstrated understanding and experience assessing outcomes.
    • Demonstrated competency with current technology.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and possess a well-articulated understanding of the role of community colleges and their students.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with learning management systems such D2L/Brightspace
    • Ability to create culturally responsive and inclusive teaching experience
    • Experience with curriculum writing
    Hours per Week 40 - 100%
    General Weekly Work Schedule
    Full-time faculty teach 15 contact hours weekly in Fall and Spring semesters. Course schedule as assigned.
