Assistant Professor of Sociology / Criminology

  • Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Sociology/ Criminology beginning August 2024 for a 9-month, tenure-track position. Our department offers three interlinked majors in Sociology, Business-Sociology, and Criminology, and includes a diverse curriculum encompassing social justice, criminal justice, social and criminological theory, research methods, and more.

    The ideal applicant for this position brings expertise in quantitative research methods, and social statistics, particularly pertaining to crime and deviance, and will assist in academic advising, professional development of undergraduate students, and in offering Service-Learning opportunities to undergraduate majors.

    This is a full-time, 9-month, benefit eligible position, which includes a comprehensive package including health, vision and dental insurance benefits, retirement benefits, and undergraduate tuition remission for employee's dependents among other benefits. NWU offers a generous sabbatical program and mentoring for new faculty.

    Responsibilities

    The teaching load will be 3 courses (4-credit courses) per semester in a traditional semester format. The successful applicant will teach Criminology, Quantitative Research Methods, Social Statistics, and Introduction to Criminal Justice, and offer elective courses such as Juvenile Justice or suggest new courses in the Criminology Major. The successful applicant will also build on their experiences in the areas of criminal justice, law, juvenile justice, gender-based violence, or others, to bring service-learning projects to our majors.

    NWU is a liberal arts university whose faculty is expected to excel at teaching and advising and remain active in both scholarship and service.

    Qualifications:

    • PhD in Criminology or Sociology is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a focus in crime or deviance. A JD will not be considered a substitute for a PhD
    • Research or Professional Experience in criminal justice, law, juvenile justice, foster care, gender-based violence, prison reform, forensics, or immigration is required
    • The ideal candidate will demonstrate interpersonal and innovative teaching skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty and students
