Professor - Special Education teaches courses in the discipline area of special education. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Special Education provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Special Education typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Provide special education students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability level.  Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Education/Certification:

    Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

    Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments

     

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area

    Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

    Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs

    Effective communication skills

     

    Experience:

    At least one year student teaching or approved internship
