Assistant Professor, Tenure Track: Education (Literacy and Inclusive Special Education)

  • The School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) at Alfred University invites applications for a tenure­-track Assistant Professor of Education in Literacy and Inclusive Special Education position with an anticipated start date of August 2024. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual who enjoys teaching, program development, and research to join an engaged and collegial faculty. Position responsibilities include serving as the anchor faculty member for the MSEd in Literacy program, collaborating with anchor faculty from the MSEd in Inclusive Special Education program, teaching graduate courses in literacy and inclusive special education, and assisting with program coordination at our Corning, NY extension site, and other future extension locations. The annual salary range for this position will be $53,000-$60,000, depending on experience.

    The SGCS delivers graduate programs in school and mental health counseling (MSEd/CAS), college student development (MSEd), and school psychology (MA/CAS/PsyD) on the main campus, literacy (MSEd) and special education (MSEd) at the Corning, NY extension site, and school and mental health counseling (MSEd/CAS) and public administration (MPA) at the Greater NYC area extension sites. The SGCS also oversees undergraduate degree completion programs in education (BS) and psychology (BA) at the Corning, NY extension site. SGCS programs in our extension sites strive to provide access and availability for nontraditional students and working professionals. 

    Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to preparing literacy educators and a research agenda that is responsive to the needs of students with disabilities, students who have been labeled "at-risk," and/or emerging readers and writers. Teaching and scholarship should address the diverse, intersectional needs of students in schools. 

    Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses in both Literacy and Inclusive Special Education; advising masters students; participating in service to the university, department, profession, and community; and maintaining an active research agenda. Occasional undergraduate teaching responsibilities may be required on an as-needed basis. This position will be anchored in our graduate education extension programs in Corning, NY. The successful candidate will teach the majority, if not all, of their nine credit (3 courses) per semester teaching load at the Corning, NY extension site. 

    Position requirements at the assistant professor rank include a doctoral degree in Literacy Education ( or similar). ABD candidates will be considered at the full-time instructor rank. Experience in teaching literacy and working with students in school settings is also required. College teaching experience is desirable, as is familiarity with alternative teaching modalities, including online and blended instruction. The successful candidate must be comfortable teaching learners from diverse backgrounds and in alternative settings. Skills in student outcomes assessment, program coordination, and working with various campus and community teams are highly valued.
