    Summary

    Successful Special Education Teacher Candidates must be able to demonstrate strong abilities in the development and implementation of strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of handicapping conditions. Must have a strong understanding of modifying the general education curriculum for special-needs students, based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.

    Special education teachers must have strong skills necessary to confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic needs. Strong consideration given to candidates that have Autism classroom and positive behavioral support experience.

    • Conduct all official business in a professional and timely manner, utilizing district technology resources.
    • Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position.
    • Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
    • Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties. 
    • Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide instruction to students
    • Create and implement a classroom disciplinary plan
    • Create lesson plans and activities to implement and supplement instruction
    • Participate in building, grade level and subject area committees
    • Participate in professional development activities
    • Maintain accurate student records including attendance, grades and discipline
    • Complete and submit forms and required reports in a timely manner
    • Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and other educational concerns
    • Participate as a member of an IEP team, 504 team or other student assistance teams as requested
    • Implement special educational plans such as 504 plans, individual educational programs and individual health plans
    • Report suspected abuse, neglect, discrimination and harassments as directed by Board policy
    • Prepare lesson plans for use by a substitute teacher
    •  Subject area teachers may have additional duties and responsibilities

    • Frequently squat or kneel to the ground
    • Frequently use repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements
    • Use close, distance and peripheral vision as well as depth perception
    • Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously
    • Move around the classroom
    • Read handwritten or printed material
