Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Special Education typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students. Special Education Liaison

    To support the vision, mission and strategic priorities of ESC Region 12 and to provide training in the following areas to Region 12 educators to further meet the needs of students receiving special education services:

    • Working primarily with LEA special educators and campus leaders to increase the knowledge, skills, and motivation of LEA teams to analyze data relevant to students receiving special education services and supports; identify a problem; reflect critically on end-user input, root causes and potential solutions; create a plan for improvement that includes sustainability of progress; and maintain a cadence of internal accountability.
    • Assist in identifing target LEA needs relevant to students receiving special education services and connect educators to special education supports and resources that effectively meet those needs.
    • Deliver or facilitate regional professional development and support to LEAs regarding special education monitoring procedures and expectations, assist with completing self-assessments, support LEA's in addressing significant disproportionality in Special Education and other duties as assigned 
    • Meet with TEA one week each month:
      • working collaboratively with ESC 12 partner Special Education Liaison and other service center liaisons around the state to develop, maintain, and share resources with LEA's
      • attending trainings on design thinking, root cause analysis, special education compliance, and other TEA intiatives 
    • Provide technical assistance with special education compliance and evidence-based best practices
    • Keep Region 12 educators abreast of current trends and issues related to students with special needs

    Education/Certification/Skills

    • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate
    • Master's degree
    • At least 5 years of experience working in special education
    • Excellent organization, communication, and presentation skills
    • Positive attitude, self-starter, and team player
