JOB ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSISTANTS Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher. Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. Help students utilize manipulatives, and master instructional materials assigned by the teacher Distribute and collect workbooks, papers and other materials for instruction. Implement goals and objectives outlined on the IEP as assigned by the case manager. Guide remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other forms of oral communication with students. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make up work, as assigned by the teacher. Help students with their clothing. Assist with regular school routine. Assist with wash-up and toilet routines (as stated in the IEP). Toileting routines, when appropriate, will be conducted in the school nurses office with another adult present (preferably the school nurse) who will provide assistance when necessary. The purpose of the second person (preferably the school nurse) is to provide assistance as necessary as well as ensure the safety and well being of both student and staff. The District will be responsible for training staff on proper lifting procedures. Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about and individual student including special strategies and instructions. Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute assigned in the absence of the regular teacher. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers. Participate in in-service training programs as assigned. Provide escort and assistance to children as necessary. Assist with the supervision of children during regular play periods. Assistant will not be responsible for invasive medical procedures (i.e. catheterization, feeding tubes).
