The West Virginia Attorney General's Office is seeking a highly qualified candidate to lead the Office’s Criminal Appellate division.
The Criminal Appellate division handles all the State’s appeals in criminal matters in the Supreme Court of Appeals and the Intermediate Court of Appeals—direct appeals from criminal convictions, state habeas appeals, and original jurisdiction writs. The division also handles federal habeas matters in West Virginia’s district courts. The division has a team of attorneys and support staff dedicated to brief writing and oral arguments in the state courts and works closely with the Office’s Solicitor General group. The division is highly collaborative; attorneys edit each other’s work and assist with case strategy and argument preparation under the Director’s lead. The successful candidate will be an excellent brief writer and editor with the ability to manage a busy and fast-moving docket, mentor more junior attorneys, and work to ensure high quality in the Office’s written and oral submissions in this critical area of the law. In addition, the Office is especially interested in candidates with previous litigation-management experience, as well as a track record in criminal law (trial or appellate) or appellate litigation more generally. Candidates must have an active West Virginia bar license or be eligible for admission.
To apply, please send your cover letter, resume, and two examples of your recent written work to jobs@wvago.gov with "Criminal Appellate Director" in the subject line.
