  • As a Postal Supervisor you are responsible for supervising and operating the McMurdo Station APO in accordance with all applicable controlling authority standards. Oversees the movement, sorting, and distribution of mail at McMurdo Station. Orders and controls all postal supplies and equipment. Processes all postal claims for McMurdo Station and the South Pole. Provides postal assistance and performs postal assist visits for the South Pole per USAF APO regulations. Performs all in-house postal training for McMurdo Station and the South Pole. Performs all COPE finance procedures.

    Postal Supervisor

    SEASON: Austral Summer/Winter

    LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica

    SALARY: $1,026 - $1,166 per week


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supervises and operates the McMurdo APO in accordance with DOD, USAF, U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Military Postal Service (MPS), Joint Military Postal Activity-PAC (JMPA-PAC), and 6005 AIRPS standards.
    • Interprets, follows, and applies DOD, USAF, PACAF, U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Military Postal Service Agency (MPSA), Joint Military Postal Activity-PAC (JMPA-PAC), and PACAF AIRPS directives/policies as they pertain to the Military Postal Service (MPS), Air Force postal operations and financial issues in the PACAF command.
    • Controls, secures, and sells all postal stamp stocks and meter postage necessary for McMurdo Station, Antarctica post office.
    • Performs financial audits for the Postal Clerk's stamp stocks and properly documents the results of each audit.
    • Keeps a daily inventory of all stamps.
    • Writes, prepares, and reviews financial reports, letters, messages, forms, documentation, and source material for proper administration and accounting procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the McMurdo Station APO.
    • Orders all stamps, and postal equipment through the United States Postal Service.
    • Provides training to South Pole Mail Acceptance Unit personnel.
    • Provides the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard postal departments with support.
    • Supervises the sorting, receipt and distribution of mail at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.
    • Manifests and prepares for shipment of all outgoing northbound and southbound mail.
    • Responsible for submitting US postal claims for the South Pole and McMurdo Stations.
    • Completes all PS3849s and PS3883s for accountable mail.
    • Follow all current PACAF directives for election mail.
    • Provides guidance to customers regarding proper mail preparation and acceptance.
    • Controls USPS and Air Force-owned accountable equipment on AMPS (PS1590).
    • Complies with all security regulations for postal operations mandated by the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the Department of Defense (DOD).
    • Completes a daily PS1412for stamps, and meter remittance, and a weekly PS1412 consolidation on AMPS.
    • Supervises and trains the McMurdo Postal Clerk in the management of postal financial accounts, postal operations, equipment, and supplies. Provides training in the daily preparation of financial reports, financial transactions, issuance of stamp stocks, and supplies.
    • Coordinates with the Christchurch APO office for the movement of parcel and letter mail to and from Antarctica.
    • Ensures compliance with Safety, Environment, Health, and Waste Management policies and procedures.
    • Completes required Human Resources Supervisory Training.
    • Supervises and trains all mail room personnel
    • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.
    • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, armed forces, and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
    • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority on the jobsite. Ongoing work center cleaning and recycling tasks.
    • Participates in MCI trainings and drill as determined by supervisor.
    • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
    • Performs other duties as required.


    EDUCATION:

    • BA/BS in Business Administration or other relevant degree required.
    • Relevant experience accepted in lieu of a degree.


    CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
    :

    • Current ServSafe Food Handler certificate must be obtained prior to deployment to Antarctica.
    • Valid driver's license
    • Valid U.S. Passport


    EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum of one year experience required in military APO, FPO or USPS operations required.
    • Basic computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets and databases required.
    • Previous supervisory experience required.
    • Previous experience with Station Services in Antarctica may be accepted in lieu of minimum experience.


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    Must be able to complete annual APO training.

    OTHER:

    • US citizenship or permanent residency required.
    • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
