Project Controls Manager develops and implements standardized project controls to manage budgets, scheduling, and quality for engineering, construction, and other types of projects. Establishes controls and operating policies that identify, monitor, and mitigate risk factors that could impact the success of a project. Being a Project Controls Manager creates standard methods for project estimating, procurement, accounting, work breakdown structure, contract management, reporting, and other project-related processes. Ensures controls address cost or budget considerations, scope changes, supplier performance, and other risk levels. Additionally, Project Controls Manager provides guidance and consultation to project managers. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Project Controls Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     Position Description

    Responsible for performing tasks at their assigned project site related to the collection and evaluation of data required to monitor project schedules and costs. Responsible for reviewing specifications or drawings and ensuring that construction progresses as scheduled and reports to management any deviations and works on corrections. Work in a safe and timely manner with the best quality possible. Represent Thompson in a professional manner to client and subcontractors alike.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the Project Management and Site Management personnel to ensure we are meeting the job schedules and costs.
    • Interface with other construction departments to provide scheduling data for items such as sub contract change requests, bid comparisons, new work item estimates, and resolution of potential schedule/work problems.
    • Calculate material/work quality requirements (takeoffs); monitor progress, percentage complete per area
    • Prepares various comparison reports, charts, and tables for project analysis
    • May draft construction schedules. Enter data into computer, debug and correct computer data.
    • Assist in developing primary schedules and maintaining personnel hour forecasts; reports schedule variances per established deadlines.
    • Assist in analyzing work progress and developing craft productivity reports to document activity requirement by the client and/or project management
    • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates used for management purposes, such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work, preparing bids, selecting vendors or subcontractors, and determining cost effectiveness.
    • May develop schedules for small portion of a project under supervision and with input from operations
    • Consult with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and resolve issues.
    • Assist in organizing and generating billing reports.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Job Qualifications

    • Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) or Construction Engineer degree preferred or a minimum of 5 years of experience.
    • Must have understanding of the nature of process systems, structures and construction technology required
    • Must have good communication skills, verbal and written, with all levels from client, management to workers and subs.
    • Must have excellent Excel computer skills (experience with Primavera P6 a plus).
    • Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly with supervisor/co-workers/clients/vendors and take direction from site manager.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, shop drawings, procedure manuals and safety rules.
    • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
