Property Casualty Underwriting Director directs and oversees the property/casualty insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Ensures the quality and integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Property Casualty Underwriting Director develops guidelines and procedures regarding risk exposure, application renewal, acceptance, modification, and denial. Manages staff of property/casualty underwriters at the organization. Additionally, Property Casualty Underwriting Director provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Has extensive knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires certification as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Typically reports to top management. The Property Casualty Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Property Casualty Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Company operates a chain of Hispanic specialty grocery stores in Texas and Oklahoma, headquartered in Spring Branch, Houston, Texas.  

     

    Summary/Objective: 

    Reporting directly to the VP, the Property & Casualty Risk Manager is responsible overseeing the organization and sister company’s comprehensive insurance and risk management program, assessing and identifying risks that could impede the reputation, safety, security, or financial success of the organization.  Monitors procedures for effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvement. The Property & Casualty Risk Manager will create and implement systems which align with the policies and procedures of the Company. Has acquired the business acumen and leadership experience to become a top function or division head.  

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Conducts risk assessments, collecting and analyzing documentation, statistics, reports, and market trends. 

    • Negotiates and hires policies: Liability, Property, Occupancy, Cyberrisk, etc. 

    • Negotiates broker commissions. $200-500K annual expected 

    • Responsible for successful outcome of profitability. 

    • Quotes with various brokers for best coverage 

    • Advises on best practices on occupational claim handling 

    • Implement reporting and claim tracking systems for accuracy and digital access 

    • OSHA training and collaboration with HR and Safety department. 

    • Stays current with Food Industry trends and continually works on self-knowledge. 

    • Establishes policies and procedures to identify and address risks in the organization’s services and departments. 

    • Reviews and assesses risk management policies and protocols; makes recommendations and implements modifications and improvements. 

    • Recommends and implements risk management solutions such as insurance, safety and security policies, business continuity plans, or recovery measures. 

    • Reviews and analyzes metrics and data such as cash flow, inventory, breakage, and employee activity that could uncover fraudulent behavior. 

    • Drafts and presents risk reports and proposals to executive leadership. 

    • Performs other duties as directed. 

     

    Education and Experience: 

     

        Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, or related field required. 

        At least one year of related experience preferred.   

     

     

    Required Skills/Abilities: 

     

    • Thorough understanding of policies and best practices of risk management. 

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

    • Excellent mathematical and critical thinking skills. 

    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. 

    • Strong supervisory and leadership skills. 

    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to prepare reports and policies. 

    • Travel on an occasional basis for onsite store visits is a MUST. 

    • Works a 50-hour week minimum and has the availability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as business dictates. 

    • Satisfactory work and attendance & punctuality record 

    • Strong work ethic, accountability, and team mentality 

    • Adheres to all company policies, procedures and practices, including established safety practices. 

     

    Work Environment: 

     

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

    • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. 

    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
