The Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for an Evidence Technician II to perform evidence transactions accurately and efficiently between examiners and customers to create and maintain chain of custody. The job duties includes:
Applies proper evidence handling including chain of custody, protecting the integrity of evidence, and accountability for security of the property room; coordinates evidence submission, and release of evidence; assesses and reviews all evidence and submission paperwork prior to acceptance into the laboratory to ensure that it meets all applicable laboratory and accreditation requirements; clarifies information on submitted evidence or paperwork to ensure efficient and complete laboratory operations; enters evidence and transactions into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) ensuring all evidence numbers and descriptions correspond between submitted paperwork and actual evidence; maintains chain of custody of evidentiary items during all evidence transactions; maintains the laboratory’s property room which includes insuring the storage of evidence utilizing appropriate bin locations, and keeping the bins and aisles clean and organized; ensures that evidence meets accreditation-mandated guidelines including proper seal and unique identification of every individual item with a laboratory barcode; resolves questions/issues that arise about evidence examinations.
Researches the status of examinations utilizing LIMS, JIMSWEB, case file information and contacting examiners and submitting agencies in order to expedite the release of evidence ready to be returned to submitting agencies.
Completes routine and extensive audits to verify the location, proper storage, and proper seal of all evidence that was transacted since the last audit.
Appears and testifies in municipal, district or federal court regarding evidence storage and chain of custody.
High school diploma or equivalent; and three (3) years of law enforcement or crime laboratory property room/evidence handling experience are required. Must pass a thorough criminal history screening and have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Associate’s degree in English, Information Systems and/or Technology, Business, or relevant field; Certified Property and Evidence Specialist (IAPE) designation; experience using a computerized laboratory information management system (LIMS) and with operations of Johnson County Sheriff's Office for chain of custody and evidence handling are preferred.

Position may be required to respond to requests for emergency and afterhours work.
