    Statement of the Job:

    The Programs & Communications Manager will promote the research, education, and engagement programs of the University of Maine Darling Marine Center, by designing and producing programs and related communications materials, e.g., brochures, newsletters, and websites. Create, develop, coordinate, and track scientific and educational programs. Work cooperatively with the staff of the School of Marine Sciences and other units on programs of mutual benefit. Assist other staff in supporting all DMC programs. The position is part of the Director’s administrative leadership team. Typical hiring range for these positions are $45,000 - $50,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    The Darling Marine Center is a proud part of the University of Maine, the state’s Land and Sea Grant University. Since its founding in 1965, the DMC has been an active center of marine research, education, outreach.     Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Typically has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree in science preferably in marine or environmental science, science communication, experiential education, business, nonprofit management, or other relevant field and at least three years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Substantial experience in program development and management, including residential life, and in science or technical communications and marketing.
    • Experience promoting, arranging, and coordinating conferences and meetings.
    • Thorough knowledge of proper punctuation and grammar, editing principles and practices, and Associated Press style.
    • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
    • Demonstrated ability in scientific and popular writing, computer word processing, graphics manipulation and page layout, spreadsheet and database use, and desktop-publishing techniques.

    Preferred:

    • Experience with website design and maintenance.
    • Adobe Creative Suite experience.
    • WordPress experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in an institution of higher education and demonstrated. commitment and experience with communicating and collaborating with diverse audiences.
