Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice.      JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Diagnoses, treats, monitors, and manages various medical conditions, disorders, diseases, and problems within area of specialty.
    • Serves as a faculty attending involved in the assessment and treatment of patients within the assigned clinical services at The Queen’s Medical Center
    • Works collaboratively with other faculty within your primary teams and other parts of the Department of Psychiatry faculty group practice primarily based at QMC to assure the larger group practice team’s effective operations.
    • Performs admissions assessments including a review of the medical history, as applicable based on the assigned site.
    • Reviews and updates patient treatment plans through team rounds, consultation with treatment staff, discussion with outside treatment providers, etc. Review includes assessment of patient progress toward treatment plan goals and need for continued treatment.
    • Provides medication management for patients without a psychiatrist or when requested by other providers and as mutually agreed upon.
    • Completes all necessary documentation as required by clinic policy to meet QMC, government and regulatory agency requirements.
    • Conducts medication groups as needed to educate patients on psychiatric symptoms and diagnosis, medication, medical aspects of substance abuse and coping skills.
    • Consults with the patients’ outside treatment provider(s) to coordinate medication and treatment issues, directs and negotiates treatment plan changes and provides documentation of the coordination of care in the medical record.
    • Consults with family members regarding patient care issues and provide family therapy as needed.
    • As agreed upon by the supervisor or per the rotational call schedule, available by beeper/and cell phone.
    • Participates in rotational weekend coverage of QMC inpatient and/or Emergency Department/Consultation-Liason services and/or nighttime attending back-up for the general psychiatry resident on-call. Depending on interest and potential clinical need, provide coverage of other sites within the UH-JABSOM Department of Psychiatry. Share a reasonable amount of cross-coverage during Academic Day (when residents are in didactic seminars) and when colleague faculty may be on leave or unavailable.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or ECFMG certification.
    • Completion of a residency or fellowship training program approved by the Accreditation
    • Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaii.
    • Current board certification in Psychiatry by the appropriate specialty/subspecialty certification board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA. If not board, board certification must be obtained within two (2) years of entrance into the position.
    • During the period of employment, shall be and remain a member of the QMC Medical Staff in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction.
    • Qualified for an appointment on the faculty of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, preferred.
    • Two (2) years’ experience in treating clinically diagnosed patients and patients with severe mental illness.
    • Prior experience in teaching medical students and residents in psychiatry and other specialties, and facilitating student-centered learning preferred.
    • Evidence of effective research, scholarly activity, or clinical administration in areas affecting human health, patient care, or methods and techniques of medical education, preferred.
    • Ability to generate new knowledge in basic science research, clinical care, or medical education, and timely publication of results in peer-reviewed journals that include at least co-authorship of publications together with sufficient independent or group research/scholarship activity preferred.
    • Training and/or experience working in the hospital settings including emergency room psychiatry, preferred.
    • Training and/or experience working in outpatient psychiatry clinics, community psychiatry and forensic settings, and telepsychiatry, preferred.
    • Experience in working with patients with serious and persistent mental illness, preferred.
    • Experience in working in healthcare teams, community psychiatry, and systems of care, preferred.
    • Scientific publications, preferred.
