Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice. Successful completion of Psychiatric residency or a Family Medicine/Psychiatry residency in an ACGME approved residency program, board certification through the American Board Psychiatry and Neurology, Nebraska License to practice, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Two (2) years of experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred.
