Lawton is approximately 90 miles south of Oklahoma City and 190 miles north of Dallas. Lawton has a population of about 94,000 residents.

    The Public Works Director performs complex supervisory, administrative, and professional work in planning, organizing, directing, and supervising the Public Works Department and other public works projects and programs ensuring technical competence and compliance with all codes and criteria; serves as Public Works Director; supervises six (6) divisions with a total of approximately 130 personnel.

    The Public Works Director regularly acts as a key member of the City of Lawton’s Management Team by participating and providing input towards establishing the City’s policies and procedures.

    • Regularly provides leadership and direction in the development of long range and short range plans for the City and department.
    • Regularly assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget.
    • Regularly provides professional advice to City Council, City Manager, Department Directors, and Superintendents
    • Makes presentations to City Council, City Manager, Department Directors, Boards, Commissions, Civic Groups and the general public.
    • Regularly maintains contact with consulting engineers, construction project engineers, city, county, state and federal agencies, professional and technical groups, and the general public regarding department activities and services

    • Professional Engineer Registration in Oklahoma or ability to obtain registration in Oklahoma by reciprocity within one year of employment.
    • Thorough knowledge of municipal public works administration; knowledge of public works operations; knowledge of environmental requirements of federal and state regulating agencies.
    • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting
    • Thorough knowledge of applicable city policies, laws, and regulations affecting department activities.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a necessary as are organizational abilities.
    • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment is vital for the successful candidate.
    • The chosen candidate will be committed to transparency, community engagement, responsiveness and exceptional customer service.
    • An approachable people-person personality and calm demeanor, along with building trust throughout the organization; at all levels.

    The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline; five years previous municipal public works or engineering experience with two years of supervisory and administrative utilities experience.
