Public Relations Manager develops and implements policies and procedures for the public relations department. Maintains favorable public image for employer or client by communicating programs, accomplishments, and/or points of view. Being a Public Relations Manager evaluates all forms of communications before release to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of message and authorizes release. Prepares and distributes news releases, fact sheets, scripts, etc. to media outlets. Additionally, Public Relations Manager requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Public Relations Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be a Public Relations Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Basic Function:
    Under the direction of the Senior Director of Alumni, Family and Community Relations, this individual will plan, organize, and direct the activities and programs of Community Relations. In this role, the individual will develop and implement a highly visible and community relations program to greatly enhance relationships with neighbors and maintain the awareness, recognition and overall reputation of the University.

    Representative Duties:External Community Work (55%) :
    As the liaison between campus and community, oversee external relations programs, projects, and events. E
    Conduct outreach and provide ongoing support and information to ensure that there are positive, trusted relationships and transparent communication with nearby neighbors and the broader community. E
    Proactively seek out external opportunities for Cal Lutheran staff to interact with the community in positive and meaningful ways .Strategize, collaborate, advise, develop and execute activities, seek sponsors and manage relationships with the Community Leaders Association in the capacity of Executive Director to the board. E
    Ensure that timely, accurate and important information reaches the community and plans, organizes, and executes consistent and informative presentations, events, meetings, tours, and one-on-one conversations with neighbors, community merchants, neighborhood organizations, and other groups. E
    Regularly host and attend community meetings to provide updates and hear feedback.
    Serve as the principal point of contact with neighbors and neighborhood groups in order to maintain a positive university image. E
    Identify, address, and mitigate unforeseen events that may impact relationships between the campus and various constituencies. E
    Identify opportunities for Universitys administration and faculty to speak at highly visible meetings and conferences in the region. E
    Applies the lens of social justice and racial equity to community outreach work using the framework of Cal Lutherans Strategic Plan. E
    Identify opportunities to represent or showcase the University at major public events and forums. E

    Internal Coordination Work (30%) :
    Ensure the community experience is incorporated into Cal Lutherans decisions and internal partners have a good understanding of the communitys needs, desires, and concerns. E
    Bring awareness of community issues to internal planning and decision making to proactively address external issues that may impact Cal Lutheran. E
    Staff and support internal subject matter experts. Ensure that they are briefed with the proper information, so they can engage the public, answer their questions, and address concerns. E
    Provide input to Division and University leadership for the identification of individuals to serve on appropriate strategic commissions and boards. E

    General Job Duties (10%) :
    Attend team and organization-wide meetings, support various projects, attend trainings and more.

    Public relations and relationship building techniques
    Advisory board processes for nonprofits and public and private businesses
    Well acquainted with local and regional community
    Report writing techniques for status and contact reports.
    Strong oral and written communication skills
    Excellent negotiation skills
    Managerial skills and experience
    Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
    Strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
    Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
    Computer proficiency in word processing, publishing and web software
    Appropriate attire and protocol for interacting with professionals
    Cal Lutheran plans and activities

    Ability To:
    Plan, organize, and direct public relations activities and programs
    Develop programs to enhance the image and visibility of the University
    Interface with, neighbors, community, business leaders faculty and staff at all levels
    Present a very positive, professional University image to various constituencies
    Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
    Analyze situations strategically, resolve any conflicts, and adopt an effective course of action
    Meet schedules and timelines
    Work independently with little direction
    Plan and organize work
    Prepare comprehensive narrative and statistical reports

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Any combination equivalent to: bachelors degree and three years increasingly responsible experience in public relations, communication, marketing or related field

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Masters degree in communication, public relations or marketing
    Bilingual Spanish/English
    Experience working in higher education programs that required direct interaction with community partners and organizations on and off campus.
