Job Title: Transportation Safety Specialist
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- CPR/First Aid Certificate;
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with a P and S endorsement;
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in school bus transportation;
- Must be able to become certified as a School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI), First Aid CPR Instructor and Mindset Trainer within one year of hire; and
- Minimum 24 years of age.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and provide in-service training for drivers and attendants, ensuring documentation and compliance in accordance with State and Federal regulations;
- Maintain safety records and documentation on all drivers and attendants;
- Process referrals and view bus video recordings related to student behavior, including communicating with school administration and parents;
- Assist and coach drivers on student management;
- Work with law enforcement personnel to coordinate safety services as needed;
- Perform necessary inventory of equipment;
- Assist Human Resources Department with recruiting, selecting, and maintaining an authorized level of bus drivers;
- Drive bus route as needed or assigned;
- Utilize good communication skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries. Accurately complete written records of work performed;
- Exercise particular caution when children are getting on or off the bus;
- Know and enforce the school system’s rules regarding student conduct on the bus, including the Transportation Discipline Matrix;
- Responsible for ongoing monitoring and review of the daily pre- and post-inspections conducted by drivers per state guidelines;
- Develop and/or select appropriate training and safety materials such as handouts, training handbooks, visual aids, etc.;
- Present major training sessions to include initial driver-training, re-certification, training for trainers, first aid, training for drivers with disabled students, and remedial training; and conduct road training which includes demonstrating the proper handling of buses in various traffic/weather conditions;
- Certify bus driver/bus attendant attainment of training benchmarks; reviews DMV records; and ensures that all drivers meet federal, state, and local regulations/qualifications to operate a school bus;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training sessions and recommends/implements improvements;
- Conduct and document on-the-road observations and random checks of school bus drivers and equipment to identify and correct unsafe driving practices and procedures;
- Respond to accidents involving school buses, investigate and collect necessary data and document and complete all required District and State reports;
- Conduct statistical analyses on types and causes of accidents/incidents to determine additional training and safety needs;
- Ensure bus stops, bus routes and bus loading zones are reviewed for safety and assists with investigating and resolving related concerns.
- Remain current on State and Federal regulations governing school bus driver training and safety;
- Act as a liaison with the community, District staff, school administrators, and parents concerning transportation-related issues/concerns;
- Comply with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and the RRPS Employee Standards of Conduct. Uphold and enforce rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, State and Federal regulations; and
- Employee may be assigned other duties based on the needs of the district during the term of employment.
Work Hours: Work hours will be in accordance with hours determined by the Executive Director of Transportation and/or the Director of Transportation Operations.

Midpoint Salary - $57,218
Final salary will be set based upon the minimum salary, education, and experience.
