HFM BOCES is seeking applicants for the anticipated vacancy of Transportation Coordinator. This is a 12-month position at the HFM BOCES Regional Transportation Center.
Transportation Coordinator
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
The work involves responsibility for establishing routes, providing information to the public and answering questions concerning school transportation services and schedules. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work in accordance with established policies. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate transportation personnel. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities (Illustrative but not exhaustive):
Participates in the establishment of routes and preparation of bus schedules;
Assists in determining transportation needs of the school district;
Assigns bus drivers to regular routes and extracurricular trips;
Instructs bus drivers regarding adherence to schedules, routes, radio procedures and record keeping;
Observes driving skills and habits of all operators and provides input for performance evaluations;
Maintains radio contact with drivers and determines and implements temporary alternate transportation routes as necessary;
Investigates accidents to evaluate the situation and to ensure that proper procedures are followed;
Participates in the preparation and filing of accident reports;
Oversees the routine maintenance and repair of buses and ensures that safety standards and requirements are met;
Maintains a variety of records and reports requiring the use of a computer which includes routine data information, mileage usage, bus utilization and repair and maintenance;
Requisitions necessary parts, supplies, and equipment;
Maintains accurate inventory records for all transportation supplies and equipment and time records for payroll purposes;
Assists in establishing a preventative maintenance program and ensures adherence by drivers and mechanics;
Assists in interviewing transportation personnel and makes recommendations on hiring;
Refers complaints regarding student bus discipline to Transportation Supervisor and school administrators;
May dispatch buses and drivers, assuring that each bus is properly staffed.

Good knowledge of the Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law and of the rules and regulations pertaining to school bus operation;
Good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade;
Good knowledge of the geography of the district;
Ability to assign and review the work of others;
Ability to remain calm in emergency situations;
Ability to transmit messages orally with good dictation, using a radio;
Ability to understand and interpret oral and written instructions;
Ability to read and interpret materials;
Ability to write reports in a clear, concise manner;
Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with the general public.
