Purchasing Director manages procurement and purchasing operations and implements the strategy to provide the materials and services to meet organizational requirements for quality, volume, availability, and pricing. Maintains strategic supplier relationships, negotiates contracts, and implements systems for monitoring performance, assessing risk, and responding to changes in demand or disruptions in the supply chain. Being a Purchasing Director collaborates with other functions to define current and future inventory requirements and manage inventory levels. Implements processes and systems and utilizes technical tools to analyze data and increase responsiveness to material demands. Additionally, Purchasing Director oversees auditing processes to ensure procurement and recordkeeping comply with any applicable industry or governmental regulations. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Purchasing Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Purchasing Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Purchasing Director is responsible for all cannabis procurement and ensuring we have the right products available at the right times. The Purchasing Director partners with the marketing and retail teams to determine product needs, then works to source, purchase and receive products. The Purchasing Director makes purchasing decisions by using data, staying current with local market trends, and having the ability to anticipate future shifts in demand. This role manages all cannabis vendor relationships and partnerships. The primary goal of the Purchasing Director is to ensure the optimal supply of product to meet customer demand.

    The Purchasing Director develops and manages effective relationships with brand and distribution partners when they:

    • Develop and manage distributor and brand relationships in a manner that promotes healthy working relationships and results in quality products available to customers at a good value
    • Effectively negotiate with vendors to ensure favorable terms for pricing and optimal supply
    • Develop distributor and brand relationships that ensure timely deliveries resulting in consistent stock on hand for core products
    • Seeks out distributors and brands that align with company values
    • Negotiate and manage brand partnerships and agreements for preferred merchandising

    The Purchasing Director takes data and analytics driven action when they:

    • Analyze sales and inventory reporting on a weekly and monthly basis and take action based upon results and trends
    • Monitor industry analytics for trends and comparative analysis and take action based upon findings
    • Monitor and manage inventory levels and purchasing to ensure optimal product mix that is reflective of customer demand and covers the store inventory needs
    • Create promotions and manage price changes consistent with inventory levels and sales demand
    • Perform regular local competitive analysis to ensure the appropriate market positioning of products pricing

    The Purchasing Director effectively manages the operations of their department when they:

    • Ensure that products are delivered in a timely manner, and that the quality of the goods received is satisfactory
    • Ensure the accurate receipt and entry of inventory in the seed to sale system and the Inventory Management/POS software
    • Partner with Marketing teams and Store Managers to ensure the appropriate merchandising of products
    • Educate Store Managers, Inventory Specialists, and Marketing teams on new products and brands
    • Develop and retain high performing staff
    • Manage the purchasing budget, ensure budget targets are met, and facilitate vendor payments
    • Participate in the determination of product and purchasing key performance indicators and ensure they are met

    The Purchasing Director supports marketing when they:

    • Maintain inventory in the Point of Sale system with accurate creation of Promotions built out in the software system.
    • Post Collections and Sales on the company website.
    • Directly supporting Marketing needs to create promotions
    • Create Purchase Orders to the naming convention and complete required data input within product creation prior to product delivery
    • Facilitate communication with vendors to complete product returns, refunds and tracking credit

    Reports To:

    • The Purchasing Director reports directly to the District Manager.

    Performance Requirements: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

    • Possess expert knowledge about cannabis products, methods of delivery and applications
    • Demonstrate an understanding of cannabis culture, customer behavior and buying trends
    • Demonstrate skill in data analytics
    • Complete monthly inventory audits
    • Be proficient with company inventory management/Point of Sale software
    • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Possess excellent organizational skills and pay close attention to detail
    • Demonstrate a passion for cannabis and the company mission
    • Adhere to the guidelines set in the Team Member Handbook, training materials and follow all Company Policies and Procedures
    • Be knowledgeable about and adhere to state and local cannabis regulations
    • Possess excellent problem-solving skills
    • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office/Google Suite with intermediate Excel/Sheets skills

    Work Environment

    • Work is performed in a busy dispensary and requires frequent contact and interaction with distributors, vendors, customers, and staff.
    • Limited travel may be required
    • Requires working varied hours and days, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Physical Demands

    • Ability to operate a computer, keyboard, tablet, scanner, receipt printer, and other point of sale equipment.
    • Frequent moving, reaching, and grabbing.
    • Occasional travel may be required
    • Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, and moving up to 50 lbs.

    Required Education and Experience

    • 1-3 years’ experience in an inventory management or related role
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Must be 21

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • 2 or more years’ experience working in the cannabis industry
