  • Under general direction of the Tourism Manager, the Sports Manager directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Sports Division within the City’s Economic Development & Tourism Department and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Economic Development and/or Tourism Manager. Responsibilities include overall administration and implementation of assigned division including development of division objectives and design and implementation of supporting units, programs, processes, policies, and/or procedures to successfully achieve program initiatives.

    1. Responsible for managing/supervising sports division activities and operations and assigned staff, including but not limited to managing and participating in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; and recommending and administering policies and procedures. 
    2. Oversee, train, motivate and evaluate assigned staff; work with employees to correct deficiencies; identify and resolve employee concerns and/or problems; direct work; complete employee performance evaluations; and make hiring, terminating and disciplinary decisions or recommendations.
    3. Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend, appropriate service and staffing levels, within departmental policy.
    4. Oversee and participate in the development and administration of assigned division’s annual budget; participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments.
    5. Serve as the liaison for assigned Sports Division with other divisions, departments, user groups, and outside agencies; attend and participate in organizational and community meetings, committees, and boards as necessary.
    6. Provide responsible staff assistance to the Director of Economic Development and Tourism Manager; conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommend modifications to sports programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate. 
    7. Gather and interpret statistical and fiscal data; prepare and submit a reports and memoranda on a variety of sports related subjects. 
    8. Serve as the liaison for non-City-owned facilities for sports events and other events, including but not limited to, representing these facilities in the best interests of the City and the Economic Development & Tourism Department; and managing the Preferred Access Agreement with Texas A&M University and any other facility usage agreements with other entities.
    9. Manage all events hosted by the Sports Division, including, planning strategies for successful sales efforts, assigning appropriate staff, and managing all sales activities.
    10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Required:   

    Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Sports Administration, Hospitality, or a field related to area of assignment and five (5) years of experience related to area of assignment, including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Texas Driver’s License. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

    Preferred:  

    Master’s Degree in Parks and Recreation or related field. Five (5) years supervisory experience.
