Position Summary/Purpose:
Milwaukee Recreation is seeking a highly motivated and hardworking individual to assist with the coordination of a comprehensive youth sports program throughout the city of Milwaukee. Primary responsibilities include the development and oversight of instructional sports activities and leagues; the hiring, supervision and training of approximately 200 game officials and part-time staff on an annual basis; management of supplies and equipment; collaboration with school officials, community partners, coaches, and parents in the delivery of sports programming; and the planning and implementation of special events.
Milwaukee Recreation manages a network of more than 900 school-based elementary and middle school sports teams on an annual basis across 11 sports including basketball, cheerleading, cross country, flag football, soccer (indoor and outdoor), softball, t-ball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Essential Functions:
- Develop and manage youth sports school-based leagues, camps, and activities.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate part-time program instructors, officials, sports coordinators, and support staff.
- Complete administrative functions including payroll, part-time staff attendance, part-time staff evaluations, and seasonal reports.
- Conduct regular site visits (evenings and weekends) to determine program effectiveness and to provide evaluation feedback and support to part-time staff.
- Supervise and oversee designated youth sports special events (e.g., MPS Run Back to School, Cheer and Dance Showcase, Cheer Camp, March of Champions, etc.).
- Assist schools with efforts to initiate, expand, and manage school-based youth sports activities to ensure equitable access for all students.
- Provide support to schools regarding player, coach, and sports coordinator recruitment, training, and retention.
- Assist in developing, or locating, a system to track student participation data in youth sports activities.
- Create and distribute seasonal evaluation surveys to participants, families, and school sports programs to measure the quality of current youth sports offerings.
- Develop a plan to increase family engagement and excitement around district sponsored youth sports programs and events.
- Conduct seasonal Sports Coordinator and Coaches meetings/trainings to provide updated information, and to identify gaps in service delivery.
- Work to incorporate new and innovative activities into programming based on industry trends and community needs to keep participation at optimal levels.
- Work with Milwaukee Recreation marketing team to increase the overall profile of district sponsored youth sports programs/events through marketing, branding, and traditional and/or social media efforts.
- Assist with the development of sport specific Athletic Advisory committees, to identify needs associated with student-athlete recruitment, skill development, MPS feeder systems, and coaches’ trainings.
- Uphold and enforce league rules to maintain a safe environment.
- Assist with the annual review and update of the program policies and procedures handbook.
- Monitor and account for program revenue and expenses.
- Arrange for the purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Assist with the identification of external funding opportunities to meet program needs.
- Coordinate facility scheduling for program activities.
- Establish partnerships with other MPS departments, schools, governmental units, vendors, and community-based organizations and agencies to develop quality youth sports programs throughout the district.
- Assist with Recreation Department activities as needed.
- Serve on committees as required and/or assigned.
- Actively supports the MPS Five Priorities for Success.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required from an accredited college or university in recreation management, sport administration, physical education, sports and fitness management, education, or related field. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum one (1) year of full-time experience planning, coordinating, and implementing youth sports programs and leagues for a large agency. Equivalent part-time experience and/or relevant certifications will be considered.
- Supervision of part time staff.
- Experience delivering services in an urban environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to plan and administer youth sports programming, leagues, and special events.
- Knowledge of player and coach recruitment and retention techniques.
- Knowledge of personnel management, including employee selection, supervision, evaluation, and training.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, sports coordinators, school leaders, community partners, media, and the general public.
- Ability to facilitate both in-person and online meetings, including the preparation of agendas, and writing of minutes.
- Ability to secure facilities for sport activities.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification, Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP), and/or Certified Youth Sports Administrator certification within first year of employment.
- Possesses strong oral and written communication skills.

Other Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Wisconsin.
- Properly insured vehicle for job-related travel.
Working Environment:
- Typical office or school environment.
- Position may be required to work additional hours, outside of the normal business day as a regular part of the job. Business day will include afternoon, evening, and Saturday hours.
- This position spends approximately 50% of its time in an office setting and 50% at program sites.
- Frequently required to travel around the city of Milwaukee and occasionally travel out of town.
Physical Demands:
The physical environment requires the employee to work both indoors and outdoors with a considerable amount of movement to attend to program needs. Some lifting and movement of supplies and equipment is required.
