Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     The Department of Radiation Oncology & Applied Sciences (DROAS), an affiliate of the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC), one of the original NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, the Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, seeks a full-time faculty medical physicist to support our clinical, educational, and research goals.

     

    The successful candidate will be based at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics in Lebanon, NH and work within a team including eight physicists, nine radiation oncologists, and seven dosimetrists. This position includes rich opportunities for research collaboration with faculty at the DCC, Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering, The Dartmouth Institute, and Dartmouth College. Education and mentorship opportunities include participation in CAMPEP-accredited graduate and residency programs in medical physics. Faculty appointment at the Geisel School of Medicine is commensurate with qualifications. Career development for the successful candidate is a high priority of our leadership.

    Facilities and Equipment:

    The DROAS clinic treats between 1,000-1,100 patients annually, with additional regional services provided in St. Johnsbury, VT, Keene, NH, and Bennington, VT. The Dartmouth Health network is currently served by 8 linear accelerators, including Varian TrueBeams for IGRT/SBRT/SRS treatments and ViewRay MRIdian accelerator for MR-guided therapy.  HDR brachytherapy, TBI and TSET therapy, and radionuclide treatments.  Treatment planning and management are performed using Varian ARIA and Eclipse environments. Treatments are delivered with active surface monitoring using VisionRT, intrafraction x-ray imaging, and with Cherenkov emission imaging via clinical trials. Radiation Oncology at Dartmouth has a very strong history in translational research and participation in national clinical trials, exceptional graduate education and research records, and plans for growth of a physics residency program.

    Responsibilities

  • Participates in the clinical aspects of radiation therapy treatment planning, including, but not limited to, maintaining a working familiarity with patient dosimetry, participating in patient plan and chart checking activities, participating in 3-D or IMRT treatment planning, etc.
  • Participates in special treatment procedures, treatment planning, and treatment delivery including, but not limited to, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) and GTC frame fitting, HDR treatment planning, prostate seed/strand implants, IMRT treatment techniques implementation and IMRT QA, etc.
  • Participates in routine physics QA program, including, but not limited to, linear accelerator calibration and monthly/annual mechanical and dosimetry, CT-simulator, OBI and CBCT, Brachytherapy, etc.
  • Provides instruction in Radiation Oncology Physics and Radiation Safety to residents, fellows, radiation therapists, radiation physicists, radiation oncologists, nurses, and biomedical engineers.
  • Engages in original or ongoing research programs. Presents status and findings at departmental, regional, and national meetings. Publishes findings in peer reviewed journals.
  • Attends tumor boards and chart rounds.
  • Acquires continuing education credits to fulfill requirements of maintenance of board certification.
  • Acts as a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Participates in continuing education opportunities and attends selected meetings. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of Radiation Therapy Physics.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in Radiation Physics, Radiological Health or allied field with 2 years of postgraduate clinical experience at a major radiotherapy center. Additional experience preferred. 

    Required Licensure/Certifications

    • Board certification or eligibility for certification, by either the American College of Radiology (ACR) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
