Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     Function:  The Diagnostic Medical Physicist supports imaging centers and hospital departments (radiology, radiation oncology, cardiology, OR, etc.) by performing evaluations of a wide variety of imaging systems in all modalities to ensure compliance with state regulations, accreditation requirements, and relevant practice standards.   The physicist will also evaluate and characterize image quality to ensure imaging equipment is operating at optimal performance levels.  The medical imaging physicist will provide consultation to clients with regard to facility design, shielding requirements, assessment of supplemental shielding, patient and occupational radiation exposure, etc.  Support is also provided with regards to reviewing technologist quality control programs, regulatory and accreditation applications, and related policies and procedures.

    Responsibilities:  

    • Perform routine audits of compliance records related to the equipment registration, regulations, and Radiation Protection Programs, 

    • Perform annual performance evaluations of radiologic imaging systems (fluoroscopy, radiography, mammography, and CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, ultrasound, nuclear medicine cameras, etc. 

    • Oversee and review technologist quality control programs, 

    • Attend scheduled hospital Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and Radiation Protocol Committee (RPC) meetings, 

    • Consult and/or direct staff in response to occupational and/or patient over-exposures. 

    • Advise, support, and consult with technologists, radiologists, and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) regarding clinical protocol management, dose assessment, and review of Radiation Protection Program Elements,  

    • Supplement hospital training program in providing or reviewing radiation safety, and magnet safety training programs provided to ancillary staff and technologists. 

    • Reviewing occupational dosimetry reports for radiation workers, and consulting as needed when ALARA levels are exceeded, or when there is concern about occupational exposure. 

    • Perform assessments of public exposure in areas surrounding x-ray rooms. 

    • Provide design, consultation, and assessment of shielding requirements. Evaluate integrity and adequacy of installed supplemental shielding. 

    Technical qualifications:  

    • A board certification by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics, or board eligibility as demonstrated by graduation from a CAMPEP accredited residency in diagnostic physics.  

    • Clinical experience in diagnostic imaging that includes general radiation safety, development and review of Operating, Safety, and Emergency Procedures, and knowledge of clinical protocols. 

    • Experience with data acquisition and processing of images including ongoing development of expertise in performing all tests required as accreditation criteria by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The Joint Commission (TJC) in CT, MRI, and ultrasound. 

    • Technical experience and understanding of state regulations, and ACR and TJC criteria, process, and compliance. Familiarity with applicable regulatory guides, and regulations. 

    • Experience with auditing records relating to all aspects of the medical use of ionizing radiation including inspection requirements, radiation dose limits, and Operating and Safety Procedures. 

    • Experience performing and developing quality control procedures to ensure optimal continuous quality of imaging systems. 

    • Understand dose calculations on patients, personnel, and members of the public based on external exposure to x-radiation. 

    • Understand and apply quantitative processes of shielding design for x-ray rooms (CT, radiographic, and fluoroscopy). 

    In addition to the technical requirements, Diagnostic Medical Physicists must:  

    • Be licensed by the state they are performing work in. To maintain state licensure, medical physicists will complete the necessary hours of CEU/CME’s in the allotted time frame. Temporary licensed (junior) physicists are exempt from this requirement as pursuit of board certification implies a continuous pathway of learning. 

    • Maintain certification through the American Board of Radiology, medical physicists with Time-Limited Certificates will comply with Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements which include: 

      • Maintenance of state license 

      • Completion of 75 CE credits every 3 years including 25 self-assessment CE’s 

      • Pass MOC exam upon completion of 10 MOC year cycle. 

      • Serve as CT or MRI Modality physicist under ACR Accreditation programs, the medical physicist must meet ACR applicable accreditation program requirements for personnel qualifications. This includes: 

        • Initial qualification of 3 years' experience or Board Certification, 

        • Completion of 2-unit evaluations in previous 2 years (per modality), 

        • Completion of 15 CEU/CME’s in prior 36 months (about 3 years). 

    Physical Requirements: A consulting physicist’s job can be physically demanding at times.  A typical day may require the physicist to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time wearing a lead apron, lift various pieces of test equipment, move mobile diagnostic medical equipment between rooms at a facility and drive between client facilities. Drive times may exceed 60 minutes to, from and in between client facilities.  The physicist must have the ability to lift 50 lb test equipment cases to a height of 3-4 feet, load and unload the cases from a vehicle and transport the equipment into and around the client facility.  The physicist is expected to communicate with colleagues and clients on a frequent basis.  The physicist will operate a computer and other electronic equipment daily.
