Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     Performs responsibilities associated with the localization of tumors, the administration of radiation therapy, and if credentialed, the completion of a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures. Is responsible for patient safety protocols. Participates in the department's performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery treatments.

    Performs in an on-call capacity as assigned.

    Appropriately performs diagnostic computed tomography scans.

    Performs the most suitable anatomical posture and positions for diagnostic radiography procedures while shielding the patient accordingly.

    Performs patient simulations for radiation therapy.

    Performs accurate patient setup and delivery of radiation therapy treatments as prescribed by the physician.

    Observes patient reaction to radiation therapy and reports any patient changes to the radiation oncology.

    Observes patient reaction to iodinated contrast media and takes the necessary steps to ensure patient safety.

    Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.

    Demonstrates the ability to professionally deal with a variety of people (patients and family members) in stressful and dynamic situations.

    Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.

    Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.

    Communicates clearly and appropriately to all co-workers and patients.

    Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel.

    Operates safely and maintains all equipment; performs pre-procedure quality assurance checks on equipment.

    Documentation meets current standards and policies.

    Follows radiation safety policy and procedure.

    Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.

    Practices medical and surgical asepsis at all times.

    Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.

    Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.

    Professional Requirements:

    Completes annual educational requirements.

    Maintains regulatory requirements.

    Wears identification while on duty.

    Maintains confidentiality at all times.

    Attends department staff meetings as required within the department.

    Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.

    Coordinates efforts in meeting regulatory compliance, federal, state and local regulations and standards

    Complies with Health and Safety Standards and Guidelines.

    Education/Experience Requirements:

    High School graduate or equivalent required.

    Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy required.

    Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography required.

    Computed Tomography experience preferred.

    Licensed by (or eligible for) the State of Montana in Radiologic Technology.

    Current BCLS certification.
