Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.   • The Radiology Therapy Technician applies ionizing radiation to the patient (inclusive of pediatric, adult and geriatric populations) in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist and under the general supervision of the Chief Therapist. This position educates, prepares and reassures patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance and reinforcing physicians' advice regarding treatment reactions and post-treatment care. This position also participates in the orientation and education of patients. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Current registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist (RTT) from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or registry eligible ** Registry eligible new hires are required to take the certification test within the first 90 days of their hire date in this position and must successfully pass the test within the first 6 months. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current RTT by ARRT American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) certification with a minimum of 12 hours of documented continuing education annually Experience REQUIRED: None Experience PREFERRED: One (1) year of previous work experience as a Radiation Therapy Technologist Education/training REQUIRED: Graduate of an AMA accredited School of Radiation Therapy Technology Education/training PREFERRED: N/A Independent action(s) required: Works with minimal supervision, seeking advice from supervisor, physician or physics staff when required. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A Additional position requirements: On-call as well as extended hours due to patient load. Works at any or all of the VCU Clinics (Massey, HMP and SPMP). Works evening shift at SPMP.
