Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist calculates computerized isodose plans for radiation oncology patients. Computes standard dose calculations and determines computerized generation of isodose curves for external beam hyperthermia and brachytherapy radiation treatment programs. Being a Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist calculates treatment machine settings, documents calculations, and records treatment data in therapy chart. Interprets physician prescriptions to develop a therapeutic treatment plan. Additionally, Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist typically requires completion of a training program in medical dosimetry and ARRT registration in radiation therapy. 1. Delivers radiation therapy to patient, explains procedure and make patients
comfortable. assists radiation oncologist/physician with treatment
planning sessions.
2. Records all treatment information in patient's chart. report any erratic
behavior of the machine to a supervisor or physicist. assists with morning
warm-up procedure and calibration checks.
3. Schedules patients on treatment machine using computerized scheduling
system. maintain continuous contact with patients, frequent contact with
nurses and physicians.
4. Calculates treatment dose as needed. observes patient for reactions and
reports same to physicians. reinforces physician's advice to patients
regarding reactions to treatment and their care.
5. Explains procedures to patients to alleviate apprehension. observes
radiation safety measures for patients and personnel. advises radiation
therapy students.
6. Maintains daily billing information for patients treated. organizes
patient's appointments, portal films, and treatment information.
performs necessary quality assurance.
7. Prepares radium for implants and assists with implants. Cleans and returns
radium to safe. maintains records of radium flow.
8. Assists with quality improvement. participate in quality improvement
teams
9. Maintains continuing educational credits. performs other essential duties
as requested.
