Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II administers radiation therapy by exposing specific areas of the patient's body to prescribed doses of radiation. Maintains patient charts, noting such information as the area treated, the radiation dosage, equipment control settings, the patient's reactions, and the total amount of radiation received to date. Being a Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II consults with radiation oncologists and other clinical staff as needed. May require a bachelor's degree in a related area. Additionally, Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II typically requires graduation from an accredited radiation therapy program, certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), and a state license to practice. The Radiation Therapist administers radiation treatments according to the treatment prescription authorized by the radiation oncologist; obtains images used to plan and target the radiation; assesses patient condition prior to simulation/treatment administration, and provides patient education on an ongoing basis throughout the course of simulation/treatment. When assigned to CT simulation, the Radiation Therapist creates immobilization and treatment aid/ accessory devices specific for each patient; utilizes technical knowledge operating a CT scanner and MED RAD power injector for IV contrast administration; obtains and analyzes cross sectional imaging for treatment planning according to the physician intent; obtains IV sites for contrast administration and performs blood draws as indicated.
