    The Sanitation Worker is the entry-level position of a flexibly staff series specification. Incumbents learn routes and become proficient at driving and operating drive automated refuse trucks to pick up residential and commercial refuse on assigned routes, perform occasional manual labor, and perform other specifically related work as required.

    EXAMINATION PROCESS:  Based upon screening of the City applicationrésumé, certification, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process.  This process may include, but is not limited to: written examination, performance examination and/or panel interview, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
     
    SELECTION PROCESS:  As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process.  Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
     
    Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

    The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
     
    • Learns to drive and operate automated refuse trucks
    • Collects and dumps garbage and refuse into refuse trucks while covering a designated route in a residential or commercial zone
    • Unloads refuse trucks at City Landfill
    • Inspects refuse trucks by checking oil, water, filters, brakes and tires and making adjustments by refilling, lubricating, cleaning or reporting for repair
    • Drive refuse trucks
    • Learn to keep route records
    • Move and empty large trash bins using truck hydraulics
    • Operate steam cleaning equipment
    • Clean trucks and equipment
    • Discuss service problems with individuals along the assigned route and refer to supervisor
    • Perform pre-trip inspection to include checking safety equipment
    • Avoid and report road hazards or obstructions
    • Operate compaction and lift equipment on both side and rear loading refuse trucks
    • May operate other City vehicles and equipment
    • Complete job related paperwork
    • Perform related work as required.

    License:  Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License.

    Education/Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is six months of experience in sanitation work and some experience in manual labor.

    Knowledge of: Safe driving practices; basic refuse pick-up procedures; and appropriate safety and injury precautions.
     
    Ability to: Drive and operate automated refuse trucks and collection equipment; learn to follow a designated refuse collection route; perform inspection and maintenance to refuse trucks and equipment; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Physical: Strength category: Very Heavy-exert force over 100 pounds occasionally, over 50 pounds frequently , or over 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push pull or move objects. Constant sitting, reaching at and below shoulder level, extending neck side to side, handling, gripping, grasping. Frequent fingering. Occasional walking, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching above shoulder level, extending neck upward and downward, pushing, pulling, twisting at the waist. On rare occasion, stands, crawls. Vision: Visual acuity which could be corrected sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Effectively hear/comprehend oral instructions and communication, and equipment and traffic noise.
     
    Mental/Psychological: Work cooperatively and interact appropriately with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public; utilize simple reading and writing skills; understand, remember and carry out detailed job instructions; respond quickly to changing priorities; communicate effectively orally; work under pressure; work within deadlines; train other workers.
     
    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:  Constantly works outdoors; on rare occasion, works indoors. Constantly working around machinery and driving motorized equipment/vehicles. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases or odors, chemicals, solvents, grease or oil, excessive noises, slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Constantly works alone; occasionally works with others.
