    Recreation staff are responsible for providing quality programs and strive to serve the community while delivering a memorable experience for each person participating in our programs. Recreation staff gain knowledge and experience teaching a variety of sports skills and general activities to youth, develop and strengthen customer service tools, and work as a team.

    This temporary opportunity is primarily a summer position with opportunities available mostly on the weekends going into fall. The days and hours of work may be flexible for some of the programming, while being less flexible for other programs, and may work for someone with a desire to earn a supplemental income. We are lucky to have a history of employees return year after year as they advance in the position, develop leadership skills and experience for future careers. We pride ourselves on having the best recreation staff in town! 

    What you will do:
    This position has staff working in parks around Salem. Recreation IV staff assist with and lead day-to-day implementation of programs, program operation, and evaluation. Recreation Leaders work with youth, ages 3-17, teaching, leading, and conducting activities such as soccer, basketball, track and field meets, tennis, pickleball, and/or flag football, backyard games, and arts and crafts. Recreation IV staff supervise, lead and motivate other staff, participants and volunteers, as well as communicate and enforce program policies and procedures. The position requires attendance at staff meetings and trainings.
     
    Work times will vary and may require working on holidays, like the 4th of July. This recruitment is for temporary positions limited to 1,200 hours per calendar year with the bulk of the work hours being in late June 17, 2024  – August 31, 2024.

    Additional information on job responsibilities:
    • Follow through on tasks and meet deadlines for communicating and reporting information to supervisor, creating lesson plans, and turning in a timecard.
    • Perform advanced coordination and leadership of a recreational program. Employees may coordinate specialty programs or classes that are offered on a regular basis.
    • The Recreation Coordinator is distinguished from lower-level recreation classifications due to the responsibility for program development and coordination, and required additional education, experience, training, and/or certifications to perform work in specific program areas. 
    • Teach basic sports skills.
    • Follow through on tasks and meet deadlines for communicating and reporting information to supervisor, creating lesson plans, and turning in a timecard.
    • Lead camps, direct/assist/train/supervise less experienced staff, communicate with parents and volunteers, assist with office.

    What are the minimum qualifications?
    • Must pass a pre-employment background check and a drug test (including marijuana).
    • Must be 16 years of age at time of hire.
    • Four years or more of advanced leadership or instructional experience, or specialized education/certification, in recreation, education, sports, gerontology, or related field, with demonstrated program development experience and training working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.

    • Successful candidates should be organized, work effectively with others, follow verbal and written direction.
    • Experience in and/or a love of sports is ideal. Assignment to the various recreational programs will be based on the candidate's skills and level of experience.
