Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Suncoast Behavioral Health Center is a 60-bed free-standing psychiatric hospital. We offer diverse inpatient, outpatient and residential programs for children and adolescents.

     

    In a highly specialized field of psychiatry, our goal is to promote cognitive, social, physical and emotional development to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to help our patients succeed.

     

    The Hospital is looking for a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS): Wednesday - Saturday: 10:30am - 8:30pm to join our team.

     

    Job Duties/Responsibilities: 

    • Providing creative and recreational activities that meet the physical, social, emotional, therapeutic, cognitive, and recreational needs of our patients.
    • Utilizes individual and/or group activity interventions to bring about positive changes in the client's behavior, be-it cognitive, social, emotional or physical.
    • Educates the client in healthy coping skills and available leisure resources to continue the client in post-discharge leisure planning and involvement.
    • Attends treatment team conferences to exchange information and observations with other members of the team, as well as assisting with the completion of the initial treatment plan and progress summary updates.
    • Designs interventions which are relevant to the specific populations served.
    • Provides a safe and trusting therapeutic environment for patients.
    • Demonstrates skill in helping patients process interventions, allowing them to process emotions related to activities, and personal meanings associated with experiences and any parallels to their lives. Motivates patients to learn and better understand themselves and the issues they face.
    • Assessing patients within two (2) days of admission and completing evaluations of progress.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreational Therapy required.
    • Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) required.
    • Two (2) years’ experience providing Recreation/Activities Therapy. Prefer minimum of two (2) years in a psychiatric setting with adolescent population.
    • Working knowledge of recreational therapy programming. Effective oral and written communication skill.
    • Extensive sitting, standing, walking, reading, lifting over (50 lbs.) pounds and participation in active physical recreational program.
