Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Be a part of something new! The Lake Burien Transitional Care Facility is being stood up by Washington state’s Department of Social and Health Services, the Department of Children, Youth and Families, Health Care Authority with generous support from MultiCare and Seattle Children’s Hospital. 
     
    The Recreation Therapist 2 will provide therapeutic recreation services for youth with complex medical conditions or injuries, including those with burns, brain injuries, chronic pain, and mental health issues. The professional in this role will assess, plan, develop, and modify these services based on physician referrals and as part of an interdisciplinary team, aiming to aid in the patients' rehabilitation and improve their quality of life.
     
    The facility will open with 12 beds and 108 full-time employees with potential growth to 24 beds and 196 full-time employees.
     
    The property was designed with children and youth in mind and features accessible spaces for onsite educational services and therapies, as well as access to outdoor space. The voluntary facility will initially serve 12 youth. 
     
    This new therapeutic facility is slated to open in July to help youth, age 13 and older, with co-occurring intellectual and developmental disabilities who have complex needs such as mental illness or substance use disorder. 
       
    King County employees receive 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary and are eligible to receive a free ORCA card for transportation use.    

     Some of what you’ll do: 
     
    • Develop, implement, and supervise formal and informal recreation programs and activities to address identified recreational needs for long term, respite and diversion individuals living within Lake Burien Transitional Care facility
    • Communicate with the interdisciplinary team, individual patients, and family members to develop and recommend patients' therapeutic recreational program
    • Assess patients in specialty services; plan, organize, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation plan of care to meet individual patient needs
    • Operate state motor vehicle to transport patients on community outings
    • Directs, trains, and coordinates the work of recreation therapy students and/or volunteers in therapeutic recreational procedures such as patient assessment and community integration; provides feedback to students on progress and completes evaluation for educational program.
    • Participate in clinical studies for the specialty

    Professionals that have graduated from an accredited Therapeutic Recreation Program

    AND

    Have 18 months of professional therapeutic recreation experience

    OR

    Have equivalent education/experience.
