Referral Specialist processes insurance pre-verification for hospital admissions or specialty service office visits. Gathers pertinent information from patients, insurance carriers, financial counselors, and other staff to confirm the patient's financial obligations for services. Being a Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between hospitals, clinical staff, health plans, providers, and patients to process referrals. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains required authorizations when necessary. Additionally, Referral Specialist documents referrals, communications, actions, and other data in an information management system. Generates and distributes all applicable forms, notifications, and paperwork. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Referral Specialist works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Job Summary:

    Collaborates with both internal and external sources to screen and facilitate admissions and referrals to the appropriate level of care throughout the continuum.

    Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Establishes and maintains client and customer relationships with referral sources and direct user of products and services or physicians.
    • Serves as community resource for educational and referral information.
    • Assesses patients to determine medical necessity and appropriate level of care with admissions based upon approved criteria. Collaborates with the physician, unit staff and case managers, as necessary, to determine appropriateness of admission or level of care.
    • Assists patients and families in understanding insurance questions and issues related to their financial responsibility associated with treatment.
    • Provides mental health screenings and consults to acute hospital(s), Emergency Room(s), walk-ins or community as needed. Assists in the development and execution of follow-up on patients waiting for non-emergent beds.
    • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    EDUCATION

    • Bachelor's degree in Mental Health or related field or equivalent years of education and experience

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Frequent reaching, sitting, standing and walking.
    • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more).
    • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
    • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
    • Occasional bending, stooping, climbing, twisting and gripping.
    • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
    • Occasional use of vision to identify and distinguish colors.
    • Occasional driving.
    • Rare repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements and squatting.

    REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
