Referral Specialist processes insurance pre-verification for hospital admissions or specialty service office visits. Gathers pertinent information from patients, insurance carriers, financial counselors, and other staff to confirm the patient's financial obligations for services. Being a Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between hospitals, clinical staff, health plans, providers, and patients to process referrals. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains required authorizations when necessary. Additionally, Referral Specialist documents referrals, communications, actions, and other data in an information management system. Generates and distributes all applicable forms, notifications, and paperwork. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Referral Specialist works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Starting pay for this position is $17.60/hour.
2nd shift differential is $1.75/hour.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for processing all orders and specimens to outside referral labs for testing not performed at the OSF System Lab in Peoria, IL. In doing so, is responsible for correct specimen, order, sample identification, shipment of specimen to referral lab. Responsible for billing patient accounts, result entry of test results, navigation in multiple referral lab internet ordering sites for order entry, reporting appropriate infectious disease results to IDPH.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Computer skills with ability to use multiple search engines on internet explorer
- Problem solving skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure/Certifications:
- Previous experience in Ic2it and/or certification in Ic2it
Other skills/knowledge:
- Analytical skills necessary to correctly identify specimen type and correct collection container for referred tests.
- Ability to multitask and work on several issues at a time with good organizational skills and judgment
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and communicate with other health care professionals
- High level of professionalism in stressful situations.
- Acquires analytical skills necessary to use the lab computer system, the hospital computer system and multiple internet sites
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple activities simultaneously while preparing specimens for shipment
- Analytical skills necessary in order to interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal test results and troubleshoot equipment such as a centrifuge and interface to the main referral lab
