Referral Specialist processes insurance pre-verification for hospital admissions or specialty service office visits. Gathers pertinent information from patients, insurance carriers, financial counselors, and other staff to confirm the patient's financial obligations for services. Being a Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between hospitals, clinical staff, health plans, providers, and patients to process referrals. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains required authorizations when necessary. Additionally, Referral Specialist documents referrals, communications, actions, and other data in an information management system. Generates and distributes all applicable forms, notifications, and paperwork. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Referral Specialist works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Referral Specialist
- Responsible for collecting and collating referrals from multiple sources in an IT database.
- Ensure complete and accurate patient registration, including but not limited to demographics, insurance information, and referral source.
- Prioritize referrals by urgency and ensure that all referrals are addressed in a timely manner.
- Confirm using Real-Time Eligibility that patient’s insurance is valid and active. Obtain referral, if required.
- Communicate status of patient appointments to referring provider.
- Return encounter notes to patients’ primary care providers, regardless of referral source.
- Communicate with patient and clinical staff to resolve any discrepancies.
- Point of contact for patients and health care providers for any questions or rising concerns. Assist in problem solving potential issues related to referral or initial appointment.
- Follow up on missing or inaccurate information.
- Schedule patient appointments for products or services, according to scheduling protocols.
- Receive and/or relay messages to patient, clinical staff, or provider.
- Answer phone calls and triage patients to appropriate offices as needed
- Bring to the attention of the Department Supervisor any issues that are unable to be resolved.
- Other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned by the Department Supervisor.
SPECIFIC SKILLS- Candidate must be able to sit for long periods of time
- Ability to provide quality communication skills with patients, staff, and physicians
- Ability to flourish in high demand possible stressful fast paced environment
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Experience with EHR systems
- Must have home internet and knowledge of Microsoft office
- Remote position requires quiet workplace environment.
- Required to live in central Ohio and have the ability to come into our main local office when needed
