Registered Respiratory Therapist assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Registered Respiratory Therapist also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is impaired function. Administers treatment prescribed by a physician for the care of patients with abnormalities associated with the process of breathing. Additionally, Registered Respiratory Therapist assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments, including oversight of respiratory therapy technicians. Requires an associate degree. Requires Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification. Requires State License to Practice. Typically reports to a manager.     Idaho Falls Community Hospital is looking for a Registered Respiratory Therapist to join our team!

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) are responsible for providing basic and advanced respiratory services for patients in all stages of life. The RRT can perform routine respiratory care in the clinical area including and not limited to initiating and monitoring oxygen therapy, medication administration, arterial puncture and breathing exercises and retraining. RRT is also able to perform critical care duties which include endotracheal intubation, initiation, management and discontinuation of mechanical ventilation. RRT may perform routine emergency care for patients ranging from infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. RRT are expected to maintain all department and hospital records and provide accurate information into the hospital records as therapy is given.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery.
    • Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
    • Communicates appropriately and clearly with Respiratory Manager, nurse of record of the patients, co-workers and providers.
    • Sets up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
    • Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure.
    • Documents all pertinent data on the patients’ medical record following completion of any service.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
    • Demonstrations knowledge and understanding of oxygen concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of varying ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients.
    • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
    • Formulates a teaching plan passed on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Patients’ family is included in teaching as appropriate.
    • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and that hospital policy is followed.
    • Has the ability to assess patient, his/her needs, and ability to tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.

    Qualifications


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Has current state Respiratory Therapy license. Graduate of an AMA approved School of Respiratory Therapy. Successful completion certifications of BLS, PALS ACLS and Neonatal Resuscitation.
    • Basic computer knowledge. Ability to use Standard Respiratory devices, such as but not limited to: ABG Machine, Ventilators, HFNC, EKG, IS (incentive spirometer) CPAP/BIPAP devices. Ability to perform chest PT.
    • Must have good working knowledge of mathematical skills related to Respiratory care.
