Registered Respiratory Therapist assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Registered Respiratory Therapist also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is impaired function. Administers treatment prescribed by a physician for the care of patients with abnormalities associated with the process of breathing. Additionally, Registered Respiratory Therapist assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments, including oversight of respiratory therapy technicians. Requires an associate degree. GENERAL SUMMARY:
Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist plans, designs, implements and evaluates the pulmonary therapeutic and educational sessions relative to respiratory disease processes, risk factor and symptom management for each patient participating in the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation through application of American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) guidelines. Assists with the referral process and to complete the interview/intake sessions. Collaborates with other Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation staff and the program Medical Director in monitoring the patient's progress toward desired patient outcomes.
Directly responsible and accountable for the care given to his/her assigned patients in accordance with departmental standards, policies and procedures. This includes detailed initial and ongoing assessments of patient needs, including life threatening emergencies, administration and evaluation of pulmonary therapeutic services and the accurate performance of pulmonary and cardiac testing procedures. Maintains all department and hospital records and enters accurate information into the hospital computer for the therapy as given.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Conducts assessments of the patient's exercise, nutritional, psychosocial, oxygen and other core components/risk factors condition and care needs by collecting accurate and thorough data on admission intake, explains the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation program in detail.
a) Reviews patient Medical History with patient/ family, assures accurate completion within appropriate timeframe. Reviews available information obtained by multi-disciplinary pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation team members
2. Formulates an individualized plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data, patient, family, and multi-disciplinary cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation team members input.
a) Initiates a plan of care based on patient-specific needs, assessment data and the medical plan of care.
b) Goals for patient are realistic, measurable and developed in conjunction with the patient/family.
c) Considers the exercise, nutritional, psychosocial, oxygen and other core components /risk factor intervention and educational needs of the patient and family in the individualized plan of care. d) Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team.
e) Reviews and revises the individualized plan of care to reflect changing patient needs based on evaluation of the patients status and/or progression.
3. Implements the individualized plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, and monitoring of the activities.
a) Provides care based on physician orders and the individualized plan of care, in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements.
b) Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
c) Assesses patient's response to exercise therapy and assists in modifying exercise prescription accordingly as per MD order and department policy.
d) Supervises exercise sessions for the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation patient, monitoring patient's cardiovascular and pulmonary responses to exercise through blood pressure, telemetry and RPE scale, oxygen saturation and SOB (shortness of breath) scale.
4. Completes accurately necessary Qtel and EPIC documentation including running daily and multi-session reports according to departmental standards.
a) Documentation is legible, timely and in accordance with standard.
b) Documentation reflects objective/subjective data, multi-disciplinary intervention and patients response to exercise therapy and treatment
5. Participates in department Performance Improvement, Outcome Measures meeting American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) standards and statistical data collecting.
6. Conducts accurate 6-minute and 12-minute walk tests and Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) studies in accordance with standard.
7. All other duties as assigned, within the scope and range of job responsibilities
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:
EXPERIENCE:
Required: One year clinical training (or the equivalent). Preferred: Two years recent and relevant experience.
