    Location: Farmington, NM

    Reports to: Community Relations Supervisor

    Summary of Position:

    The Community Affairs Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the company public affairs office on the Navajo Nation. The Community Affairs Specialist will be the first point of contact for day-to-day interactions with the public and will provide administrative and general clerical support.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Communicates directly with both impacted and other chapters. Coordinates and works with local chapters and communities. Establishes good working relationships with local chapter officials
    • Attends chapter meetings and other meetings as needed especially when issues are related to NTEC.
    • Presents to the chapters and communities as it relates to NTEC. Informs the chapters about NTEC and its overall efforts; should also be able to understand Navajo and converse if needed
    • Presents to relevant departments of the Navajo Nation regarding NTEC community outreach efforts.
    • Coordinates, plans and research issues that impact the local communities. Prepares general community needs assessments
    • Shares with the chapters NTEC policy and procedures as they impact the communities.
    • Identifies needs of the chapters and local communities and makes recommendations to NTEC.
    • Identifies local chapters and communities' projects/programs and makes recommendations for NTEC support
    • Interprets NTEC policies relating to community projects, use of project and program support , land issues and other chapter/community related matters
    • Recommends and prepares general proposals and other pertinent documents that could better impact and assist the communities
    • Recommends or provide technical assistance on community proposals, resolutions, correspondence and other documents;
    • Establishes a records system of tracking
    • Develops, executes and manages outreach programs for the communities
    • Recommends how NTEC can assist and participate in special events that impact the chapters and communities.

    Necessary Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree with completion date within 12-18 months) in community relations, community development, government affairs or related field.
    • Must have two to four years of experience in an administrative support role, community relations, or any combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge to successfully perform the essential job functions.
    • One or more years’ experience translating between Navajo and English languages required.
    • Applicant must provide written letters of recommendation from his or her past supervisors who are willing to confirm their recommendations and attest to all of the following:
    • the applicant’s strong communication and interpersonal skills,
    • the applicant’s ability to work well with others,
    • the applicant’s ability to prioritize goals and deliverables,
    • the applicant’s analytical ability to develop solutions for complex problems,
    • and the applicant’s ability to work under pressure.
    • If applicant is a past or current employee or contractor, his / her personnel file and evaluations will be considered. Employees with poor performance records, verbal warnings, and disciplinary actions that were not satisfactorily resolved or whose file demonstrates a failure to meet qualifications will not be considered.
    • Failure to provide accurate or all required information and meet the necessary qualifications will result in automatic denial of the application.

    • Must demonstrate a high degree of confidentiality and possess the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

    • Strong personal commitment to safety.

    Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to frequently sit with frequent forward bending and occasional rotation. The employee must rarely lift, carry and/or move up to 13 pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to rarely push or pull up to 45 pounds horizontally. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required occasionally to walk; climb stairs; and stand with rare rotation. Rarely the employee is required to squat repetitively or reach up to 74”. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

    Working Environment: Works in office environment and rarely site environment. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
