Media Relations Specialist - M&C

  • The Media Relations Specialist is responsible for helping to develop an earned media strategy, as well as executing and evaluating the plan, with a special emphasis on pitching to media in Louisiana. This position will handle media relations and publicity for university-related news items as directed by the Vice President of Marketing and Communications. 

    Essential Functions:
    • Public relations writing such as general news releases, media alerts, public service announcements and distribution of these communications, including emailing to the Loyola community and posting to the website as directed.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with the media at all levels, particularly local and regional, but also national, for placement of university news. Specific objectives include securing media placements for university accomplishments and events, as well as the successes of faculty, staff and students.
    • Creates and consistently updates a comprehensive media list, which includes key journalists and news organizations.
    • Monitors media for issues related to Dillard University and advises, develops and implements timely university responses, as assigned.
    • Drafts the weekly Friday Five email, a roundup of top media mentions and other accomplishments.
    • Maintain weekly web content for a news section on the Loyola homepage and separate news archive area.
    • Plans and executes press conferences.
    • Maintain and update the Experts Guide on an annual basis.
    • Draft some content for the president’s weekly newsletter as assigned.
    • Create reports on an as needed basis that show news coverage, ad values and circulation reach of earned media for the university and assigned colleges.
    • Assist with the yearly update to the Crisis Communication Plan; be prepared to conduct offsite communication during times of crisis.
    • During times of crisis, assists with campus messaging, social media response, and talking points for leadership about the issue.
      
    Additional Responsibilities:
    • Attendance and/or participation at scheduled Loyola events as requested.
    • Handling various public relations assignments as needed and determined by the VP of Marketing and Communications.

     Required Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:               
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or Communications
    • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in journalism and/or
          public relations
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously
    • Knowledge of computers and various software programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
    • Knowledge of web content management systems and experience in social media implementation

    • Strict attention to detail and a caring for quality of work and accuracy
