Fire Safety Inspector - Educator

  • This is technical and administrative work teaching fire and life safety education and fire prevention classes and providing counseling on fire setting to juveniles. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

     ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Teaches public fire and life safety education programs at all grade levels in public and private schools in Douglas County; teaches classes on fire safety and prevention to business and civic organizations; prepares lesson plans and administers pre- and post-tests
    • Schedules fire and life safety education programs provided to the public at fire stations
    • Provides counseling to juveniles who have been identified through investigations as juvenile fire setters; meets with parents and provides counseling referrals and resource assistance if trained in this area
    • Maintains inventory and orders supplies as needed for public fire and life safety education classes
    • Other duties may be assigned

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
    • Continuing education (preferred) with specialized courses in
      • Education
      • Management
    • Three years of progressive experience in related fields such as education
    • Any equivalent combination of education or experience may be acceptable

    ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older
    • Must have no felony convictions within the past ten (10) years
    • Must have the ability to pass a physical examination
    • Must meet minimum physical fitness requirements as set forth by Firefighter Professional Qualifications published by the National Fire Protection Association

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    • Possess and maintain a valid United States driver’s license; a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle.
    • Certification as Fire Safety Educator must be obtained within one (1) year of appointment
    • Certification as Juvenile Fire setter Intervention Specialist II is highly desirable for this position

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire safety education
    • Ability to collect data, information and trends
    • Ability to establish facts and to draw valid conclusions
    • Ability to write reports
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all age and socio-economic groups
    • Ability to utilize a variety of instructional tools and techniques such as lecture, hands-on applications, illustrations, role-playing, etc.
    • Ability to retain valid certification as fire safety educator on an annual basis
    • Skill in public speaking

    Ability to retain valid certification as a Certified Firefighter on an annual basis.

    Salary: $47,866.83 annually, ($23.0129 hourly) plus full benefits package
