    Your Specific Responsibilities:

     The incumbent represents the agency along with its mission and values. The incumbent is part of the global public health organization and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, respect, and teamwork in a diverse environment. This is a highly responsible nutrition educator position performing nutrition and quality management duties at any site or location in the geographic area covered by the Manatee WIC program.

     

     

    Nutrition Education Duties:

    • Provides individual and group nutrition education and therapeutic counseling for WIC clients according to all local, state, and federal guidelines.
    • Certifies clients for participation in the WIC Program in accordance with policies of the State of Florida WIC Program and regulations stated in DHM 150-24.
    • Documents all nutrition education in the client’s electronic record, located in WIC WiSE program, and on EARs; using proper SOAP format.
    • Provides nutrition programs through outreach efforts to health care professionals and members of the community.
    • Ensures that clients get the recommended number of nutrition education contacts.
    • Provides nutrition education on a group or individual basis in the areas of infant, childhood, prenatal, and postnatal (including breastfeeding) nutrition to promote development and maintenance of good nutrition habits according to all local, state, and federal guidelines.
    • Follows policies and procedures for collection, entry, and management of data as well as the operation of computer terminals and printers according to the WIC Manual and DHM 150-24.
    • Selects, develops, and evaluates clients’ educational materials.
    • Coordinates nutrition education services for assigned clients and makes referrals for appropriate services, which may include breastfeeding and any other social service agencies, as needed.

     

    This position may serve clients that speak only Spanish, Creole, or other languages. It may require performance of interpreter duties, if bilingual, or implementation of the Department's Limited English Proficiency Plan. Performs other duties as required, including performance of additional interpreter duties, consistent with skill level, and as needed.

    Participates in outreach activities, which will enhance the community’s knowledge of the WIC program, by attending health fairs and/or providing presentations on appropriate nutrition and breastfeeding education. These activities will be on current science-based information for clients who may be eligible for the program and will represent the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County in a professional manner.

    Independently and professionally addresses and resolves all customer service issues and takes appropriate actions. Will keep supervisor informed of the situation and outcome by the end of the workday. May be required to perform additional duties at the direction of WIC Director or Public Health Nutrition Supervisor.

    Travels to other clinic sites, when scheduled, to provide nutrition education to WIC participants or caretakers and to perform WIC certifications.

    Assists the Public Health Nutrition Program Director in the completion of inventories and in the development of quality improvement (QI) tools and QI monitoring activities.

    Accurately completes all forms such as timesheets, EARs, encounter documentation, leave and attendance records, mileage, and other necessary items by the required deadlines. 

    Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and other professional and staff development activities.

    Performs other related duties as required by the supervisor.

    Information Security: Maintains the confidentiality for the information in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, regulations, and DOH Information Security Policies, Protocols, and Procedures, in accordance with Protocol: Security 3, V, Section 1-3.

    Other duties: Performs other related duties as required (i.e. assist with preparation of annual report, strategic plans, and newsletter).

    Incumbent may be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent incudes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats involving any disaster or threat, man-made or natural.

    • Ability to assist clients in accessing community resource services.
    • Ability to understand and apply the methods and practices used in medical, nutrition, child development, or child care settings.
    • Ability to interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work activities.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Products, Email, MS WORD.
    • Ability to use WIC program related software, and provide proof of successful completion of the WIC WiSE competency test.
