    The main function of a General News Reporter is to procure information and news in digital and print formats for multimedia products in an efficient and timely manner. In this role, a General News Reporter will acquire news through assignments, sources and tips. Breaking news should be organized and credible enough to publish directly to our websites when necessary. As part of a small news team working with other Alaska Sound Publishing Inc. publications, there is opportunity for advancement, including senior reporting and editing positions.

    Expectations:

    • Produce local news content for digital and print formats. Shooting photographs is required.
    • Should be proficient at using digital tools and print / digital software.
    • Must be adept at social media and new media platforms.
    • Will be required to produce daily breaking news as needed, and cover some in-depth reporting and other reporting as may be assigned. About 4-6 stories a week are required, as well as producing other content for our community news and other sections.
    • Must be able to focus on issues and content reflective of our readers’ values and concerns.
    • Must be able to learn and understand the culture, economy and community of the Southern Kenai Peninsula, and develop sources and contacts.
    • Must be able to keep up with local, state and national news. This will include perusing digital, print and local sources to establish sources.
    • Must complete clerical tasks, clocking in and out, expense reporting, etc.
    • Must be able to work as part of a team and independently as the workload dictates, including with staff at the Peninsula Clarion and Juneau Empire.
    • Must follow all company policies and procedures, including COVID-19 safety practices.
    • Must have a working cell phone and reliable transportation.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must have a valid driver’s license and be properly insured.
    • Must have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or the equivalent and at least 2–5 years of experience as a reporter for a news gathering entity. Experience at college newspapers or internships will be considered as experience.
    • Must have advanced computer skills and a working knowledge of AP style.
    • Must be proficient in PhotoShop and InDesign and be able to learn quickly the GPS news management system.
    • Strong editing skills are a plus.

    This is a full-time position that includes a wage of $18.00 per hour, excellent benefits: medical, dental, life insurance, a 401k with company match, and paid time off.
