  • The Alpena News is looking for a dedicated, talented, driven individual to join its award-winning newsroom team as a health care/environment reporter in beautiful northern Michigan.

    This reporter will cover all issues related to health care in Northeast Michigan, from the goings-on at the Alpena hospital and local public health agencies to covering health care trends and stats. This reporter also covers all the things natural resources, an important part of the way of life and economy in Northeast Michigan, including hunting and fishing and other outdoors activities, Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and other wildlife news affecting Northeast Michigan.

    A bachelor’s degree or related experience in the field of journalism is required.

    Like all Alpena News reporters, this reporter also is responsible for special projects and may be asked to cover other beats and breaking news as needed.

    Alpena News reporters are responsible for generating at least six stories, six photos, and six briefs per week. Stories are usually generated by the reporter but can be assigned by editors as needed.

    Reporters work five days a week, usually Monday through Friday but also participate in a weekend rotation, working a weekend shift every three weeks, taking a weekday off those weeks. Reporters' hours vary as needed, but typically run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an hour lunch most days, but reporters also rotate a night shift from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with an hour lunch.

    Reporters start earning paid time off as soon as they begin working.

    The Alpena News always punches above its weight and expects its reporters to do the same while having fun along the way.
