    Job Description
    The Education and Social Policy Project (ESPP) at Syracuse University invites applications for a Data Analyst. The Data Analyst will work with Professor Michah W. Rothbart on empirical research in education policy and finance, employing quasi-experimental methods and cutting-edge econometrics. Key projects use large administrative data sets for NYC public school students to: (1) explore how COVID-19 pandemic affected children’s health and education in NYC over time, including changes in racial/ethnic and income disparities, the effects of vaccine availability and uptake, and the role of school and neighborhood resources in shaping outcomes and disparities; (2) examine the extent to which universal free school meals affects child participation in social welfare programs, such as SNAP and TANF; and (3) investigate the role of environmental, contextual, and system level drivers of student absenteeism and identify school and district policies that could improve attendance. Preference will be given to candidates with strong data management and writing skills, experience using large administrative data sets, and an interest in grant writing. The Data Analyst will work with others on multiple stages of research, including data cleaning, statistical analyses, and the development of new projects.

    Qualifications
    • B.A./B.S. or M.A. in Economics, Education Policy, Public Policy, or related discipline.
    • Quantitative research skills: this position requires strong background in construction and management of large datasets, quantitative empirical methods, and proficiency in statistical software such as Stata.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Organization and communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of a team of researchers.

    Job Specific Qualifications
    • Applicants must have master’s level training in Economics, Public Policy, Education Policy or a related discipline at the start date or undergraduate training in such a field with 1-2 years of relevant work experience.
    • Preference will be given to applicants with strong quantitative skills, experience analyzing large datasets, and demonstrated capacity for academic publication.
    • Weight will also be given to candidates with relevant work experience and evidence of previous research experience.
    • The applicant must be in residence, with ability to travel to New York City a plus.

    Responsibilities
    • Under the direction of the faculty supervisor, collaborate on COVID, universal free school meals, and absenteeism project research, compose project datasets, and conduct quantitative analyses of secondary data.
    • Write grant proposals and paper drafts under direction of the faculty supervisor.
    • Draft analyses under direction of the faculty supervisor.
    • Provide technical support to doctoral students and research staff and respond to data requests as approved by the faculty supervisor.
    • Work on other projects and tasks assigned by faculty supervisor.
