    A day in the life of a Research and Development Microbiologist at Thorne requires the employee to:   

    • Develops scientifically valid methods using in-house microbiological instrumentation and other techniques as appropriate.
    • Develops and performs protocols for method or matrix validation.
    • Provides reports on completed protocols.
    • Makes recommendations to QC Laboratory Management regarding future instrumentation and laboratory equipment needs. Assists in the planning of procurement, installation, and implementation of instrumentation and equipment.
    • Recognizes analyses being performed by a third-party laboratory; develops and validates in-house methods that can replace them. This may require the use of discretionary decision-making and/or collaboration with QC Laboratory Management.
    • Regularly evaluates effectiveness of methods currently being performed in house.
    • Research relevant topics and gathers information/data.
    • Assists Microbiology Laboratory personnel troubleshooting instrumentation and/or method problems.
    • Assists in the training of Microbiology Laboratory personnel on instrumentation as needed.
    • Assists QC Laboratory Management and other departments to determine root causes of out-of-specification results (OOSs) and assists in non-conforming material (NCM) investigations.
    •  Assists QC Laboratory Management and other departments to set up special testing protocols as needed.
    • Completes and maintains all required documentation for procedures, recording work, and results.
    • Becomes thoroughly knowledgeable of the applicable provisions of Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and maintains knowledge base on an ongoing, timely basis as procedural changes occur without relying on management intervention or direction
    • Demonstrates knowledge of related regulatory agency requirements and guidelines including but not limited to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, etc.

    This is a FLSA Exempt position.

    Employment is contingent on satisfactory results from a drug screening and background and reference checks. 

    What You Need: 

    • B.S. degree in Biology or science-related field with a minimum of 12 hours credit in college microbiology is required.
    • Must have a minimum of 3 years of microbiology laboratory experience. Prior experience in a cGMP or ISO laboratory environment is desirable. Previous experience in microbiological method validations, transfer, or verification preferred.
    • Relevant microbiology laboratory experience along with demonstrated aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments is required.

    Physical Demands:

    • This position is periodically exposed to dangerous acids, solvents, fumes, or airborne particles where personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Must be able to work in Biosafety Level 2 areas while wearing laboratory PPE (lab coat, safety glasses, and nitrile gloves).
    • Must be able to work in a stationary position as well as move about unassisted.
    • Must be able to safely and carefully operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
    • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or use a stepladder as circumstances arise during a shift.
    • Must be able to hear and converse with supervisors and other employees.
    • Must be able to see and read small print.
    • Must be able to work in a low-to-moderate noise level environment.
    • Must be able to work an 8, 10, or 12-hour shift and overtime as assigned.
    • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 30 pounds, e.g. from the floor to a table and/or from a table to the floor.
    • Must have sufficient range of motion with arms and hands to periodically reach overhead and to the side during an 8, 10, or 12-hour shift.
