    Seeking a candidate with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering as well as credentials in applied mathematics, machine learning methods, and statistical techniques, with experience in multi-scale mechanics, metallurgy and powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing (cold spray and WAAM), and advanced materials engineering and processing. The Post-Doctoral Fellow candidate will be managing, under the Assistant Professor's supervision, a group of 6 to 8 graduate students working on DoD funded projects.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Responsibilities

    We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to specifically support the Pl in laboratory and research management, specifically in powder metallurgy, cold spray processing, WAAM processing, and multi-scale mechanical characterization. The candidate is expected to contribute to the research goals of the DoD funded projects. The opportunity may arise to present to top university staff, funding organizations, and/or external collaborators. The initial project assignments will depend on the candidate's expertise. However, the candidate is expected to learn new technologies on the job, to support activities such as:


    • Processing and characterization of metallic powders, wires, and consolidations made using said feedstocks
    • Design, carry out, analyze, and present experiments related to optimizing metal additive manufacturing from powder and wire to final part
    • Operate additive manufacturing equipment
    • Utilize analytical and physical testing apparatus to qualify spherical powders and finished parts for metal additive manufacturing applications
    • Characterization techniques to include thermal (calorimetry), mechanical (nanoindentation, instrumented indentation testing, traditional mechanical methods, and indentation plastometry), and microstructural (microscopy), hybrid mechanical-microstructural characterization via
      • In-situ nanoindentation with SEM
      • FIB, SEM, EDS and EBSD
    • Lead AM process/materials/research engineers utilizing best practices
    • Maintain appropriate additive manufacturing validation and process records
    • Determine equipment and tools needed to achieve R&D and manufacturing goals. Maintain research relationships for the research group with internal and external collaborators Train and manage undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. research students
    • Maintain appropriate additive manufacturing laboratory equipment
    • Evaluate high value capital equipment for the lab, including FIB/SEM/EDS
    • Write funding proposals and annual reports to funding agencies
    • Develop machine learning and data-driven materials processing models
    • Advance nanoindentation and indentation plastometry as fields of study and range of applications

    Requirements:

    The successful candidate will have a strong background in Materials Science and Engineering, applied mathematics, data science methods, laboratory experience, demonstrated independent technical work, contributed to experimental plans, data collection and analysis.

    It is required that the candidate has:
    • A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering
    • Strong understanding of how microstructures affect properties and how processing can be used to design microstructures
    • Demonstrated technical leadership in project management and product development Exceptional technical competency in the areas of metal additive manufacturing processes- from powder to post processing
    • Materials characterization experience, including FIB/SEM/EDS
    • Materials characterization experience, including advanced nanoindentation and Indentation Plastometry
    • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both teaching and influencing
    • Peer reviewed publications, patents, or conference presentations
    • Fluent with Microsoft Office packages
    • Proficient in English (both written and oral)
    • Ability to work in a small team atmosphere
    • US citizenship


    It is desired by not required that the candidate has:
    • A Ph.D. thesis related to the multi-scale mechanics and metallurgical structure-processing-properties-performance relations
    • Experience with TEM, DSC/TGA, adhesion/tensile testing, fracture toughness characterization
    • Experience with safe handling of metallic powders
    • Strong understanding powder metallurgy
    • Experience with heat treating
    • Management/project management experience
