    POSITION SUMMARY

    The R&D Intern is responsible for supporting the R&D team in the design, development, and testing of new implants, improvements to existing designs, and in the development and optimization of novel processes. This may involve assisting in prototype development, planning then executing laboratory experiments, analyzing data, and preparing documents and presentations. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, have a hands-on and detail-oriented approach to performing their work duties, and be able to work both independently and on a collaborative team. 
     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Applies science or engineering-based competencies to contribute to the design and development of prototypes for new implants, improvements to existing designs, and improvements to current processing methods 
    • Analyzes data and draws conclusions using statistically sound and scientifically based methodology 
    • Writes protocols, reports, SOP’s, and other technical documents in accordance with Good Documentation Practices 
    • Participates and consults with the internal and external scientific community to maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge to achieve successful experimental outcomes 
    • Designs or identifies tools or other job aids for use in the manufacture of new products 
    • Learns aspects of relevant surgical procedures to develop innovative solutions to solve/satisfy customer needs 
    • Assists senior staff with routine scientific assignments or tasks that are an integral portion of larger projects in alignment with scientific methods and RTI standard operating procedures 
    • Other duties as assigned


    REQUIREMENTS

    Education

    Must be an undergraduate student in 3rd or 4th year of studies or a graduate student in a relevant science or engineering field (Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, etc.) 


    Must be able to commit at least 12 hours per week during normal business hours towards this position

    • Must have the ability to independently design and conduct experiments, then analyze and interpret data 
    • Must have effective communication (verbal/written) and organizational skills 
    • Must have interpersonal skills and the ability to work on a collaborative cross-functional team 
    • Must have the ability to resolve technical issues within the scope of educational expertise with assistance and monitoring from more experienced staff 
    • Must have the ability to solve problems and make suggestions or improvements based on recently acquired technical skills

    • Broaden scope of engineering or scientific experience and apply in the real world 
    • Understand your role in a business 
    • Learn how to conduct yourself in the workplace 
    • Gain valuable insight into project management, bringing a product to market, and laboratory testing

    • Move or lift objects up to 25 pounds
    • Frequent (>75%) stationary position (standing or sitting) while utilizing digital displays
    • Frequent (>75%) fine manipulation using hands and fingers (typing, opening, writing, clicking, paper sorting, etc.)
