Being a Research and Development Director consults with top management and research and development team and makes recommendations based on research findings and product performance. May require an advanced degree. Additionally, Research and Development Director typically reports to top management. The Research and Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Research and Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Team Description:
    The AI Foundations team at Capital One is responsible for bringing our vision for AI to life. We work collaboratively with academia, product, technology, and business leaders to apply state-of-the-art AI research to our business.

    Roles and Responsibilities:
    - Collaborate with cross-functional teams of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to develop AI-powered products for enhanced customer interactions.
    - Utilize a wide range of technologies, such as Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, VectorDBs, etc., to extract meaningful insights from vast volumes of numeric and textual data.
    - Lead the development of AI foundation models across various stages, including design, training, evaluation, validation, and implementation.
    - Engage in high-impact applied research to integrate the latest AI developments into the next generation of customer experiences.
    - Effectively communicate the complexity of your work in simple terms to align with business objectives.

    - Innate curiosity and a continuous drive to explore emerging technologies and their applications.
    - A creative mindset, with the ability to tackle complex problems and challenge convention.

    - Deep understanding of AI methodologies and experience building large-scale deep learning models.
    - Proven track record in delivering models at scale.
    - Experience in delivering code solutions within existing products.
    - Demonstrated research capabilities, such as first-author publications or projects.
    - Ability to independently drive research projects and choose impactful research problems.

    Basic Qualifications:
    - Ph.D. with at least 6 years of experience in Applied Research or M.S. with at least 8 years of experience in Applied Research.
    - At least 5 years of people leadership experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    - Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
    - In-depth knowledge and experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Geometric Deep Learning.
    - Expertise in areas such as training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, reinforcement learning, and high-frequency trading.
    - Proficiency in fine-tuning large language models.
    - Strong background in data preparation, including tokenization
